Just watched The Paper Chase again for the first time in forever. I guess Houseman really was a carbon copy of Kingsfield in real life. God, I hated those advertisements he did for some stock brokerage (Smith Barney?). "They make money the old fashioned way. They earn it." Grrrrr

But if anyone was born to do such ads, it's Houseman. He looks and sounds like snooty upper class wealthy elite incarnate.

For sure. he might as well had a name tag saying "Hello, my name is Professor Kingsfield". But those ads were everywhere and "making money the old fashioned way" is working for it. not skimming commissions, as my father used to say.
The only other movies I remember him in was Seven Days in May (tiny part), Rollerball and Ghost Story. There was a miniseries in the late 80's about Lincoln where he played Winfield Scott and he was great in a regrettably small part.

Leslie Nielsen. Nielsen was known more for drama and even though he starred in movies like The Forbidden Planet, he wasn't exactly a big star. After Airplane, he reinvented himself as a big comedy star, which led to The Naked Gun films and many others. Leslie Nielsen had white hair when he was younger too that doesn't mean he was famous later in his career.

Even though he always hovered around number ten billing in Westerns, Lee van Cleef really became big after he sold out to Hollywood Italian spaghetti. Selling out to the hack Westerns that made the drug crazed paint sniffing crack heads guffaw and grin made big names out of those who were willing to do away with inspiration and art to appease the ignorant masses. Can't really blame van Cleef for the career move, no matter how humiliating it must have been to appear in some Leone losers.
