I'm rewatching clips on Youtube and the part where Alan finally escaped from the game and and looking for his deceased parents was quite devastating, particularly this scene:

I remember finding Alan trapped in the game his whole life really depressing and disturbing as a kid.

There actually a kind of creepy vibe to the whole film. The opening scene where they are burying the game feels out of a horror movie

The original Jumanji had a heart which made up for the sketchy CGI wheras the new rebooted franchise is the opposite.

Yeah, it was a reference to Peter Pan with the same actor always playing Hook and Mr. Darling. My guess is that Joe Johnston thought it would be a cute way to recall Williams in Hook.

That was part of its charm. Apparently Roger Ebert criticized the scarier elements of the movie in his already negative review, thinking the movie should had been PG-13.
