The writer QT cites clarified that Bruce Lee wasn't hitting stuntmen just to be a dick, he was trying to make the fights look more real and shit happens. It's nice that QT thought he was looking out for the little guy or whatever (and until now I couldn't make heads or tails of QT's seething personal hatred of an actor that died 50 years ago) but as with Roman Polanski and Like a Virgin, he's got a knack for misinterpreting things.

Does anybody know the truth? Bruce Lee's competitive fights I've witnessed on camera look like basic sparring sessions so his fans fall back on anecdote and the fact that every top fighter acknowledges his skill set as a world-class martial artist who could finger punch 10 times a second? Is that like fingerglove puppets or Iron Mike Tyson's sledgehammer? And does that easily translate to the octagon?
James Coburn was trying to enlist the great one before he took Charles Bronson back through his paces in 'Hard Times'. Some Lee fans today ridicule Bronson who wheezed between takes like John Wayne on steroids.

His response of “I understand his daughter being upset, it’s her father. But anyone else can go suck a d-ck!” is great. Lol

Bruce Lee was one of the most overrated and over-hyped entertainers of all time. His myth grew because he died so young. Had he lived to his old age, nobody would have given two shits about him.
Lee was an exhibitionist. He never fought professionally. There's no video footage of those alleged fights he took part in.

That's doubtful considering how many celebrities are still beloved into their old age.

His response of “I understand his daughter being upset, it’s her father. But anyone else can go suck a d-ck!” is great. Lol I mean, not really. He character assassinated the guy, which is lame enough as it is, but then he'll get on another director's tits for misrepresenting the guy who made Deep Throat, so he's being a hypocrite too.

The truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.
Was he one of the greatest martial artists to ever make movies? Sure.
Was he one of the greatest marital artists that ever lived? Probably not.
He was just a man when it comes down to it. And a legend built around him.

That's my point. He's not really anything more than that. He had a talent and he used it to make movies. That's all. As to the "based on what?" part of your question... are you suggesting that he WAS the greatest martial artist that ever lived? How can you or anyone know that? Do you know all the martial artists that ever lived? Or even all the ones that lived only within his lifetime? What we saw from him were movies. Of course he's going to win in his own movies. Eddie Murphy can beat your ass in his own movies. Is Eddie Murphy a great comedian? Sure. Greatest ever? How can we say that?

You didn't ask if he was the greatest, because in any field that's always going to be debatable. You said he probably wasn't one of the greatest martial artists of all time. Of course he was. He was hugely responsible for popularizing martial arts in the west, invented his own hybrid martial arts style and wrote books about martial arts. Taking all that into consideration, and the fact that he won a boxing tournament in his youth, and he was a lightning quick pile of muscle with moves that convinced all of Hollywood he was the guy to go to for training; I'm going to say the guy could handle himself in a fight. We've all seen the film, it isn't like he was using special effects. Whether or not he was 'the greatest' can never be proven, but the fact that every martial artist since his time holds him in the highest of regards in their chosen field, it's clear he was one of the all time greats. You either made a false assumption or you simply misspoke, but I never suggested he was the single greatest martial artist of all time. As you said, that kind of thing is impossible to prove unequivocally.

Anyway as far as the controversy regarding Lee's depiction in OUATIH, I can say as a Bruce Lee fan that I got a kick out of it (that wasn't supposed to be a bad pun, but here we are). He came off as kind of douchey, but so did the main characters so it was par for the course. Regarding the fight scene, Bruce and Cliff both got some good licks in and the fight was broken up before it was decided. QT has talked about this at length and I agree with him. Cliff is a fictional character, "It's like asking if Bruce Lee could beat Dracula." If QT says Cliff would win, so be it. I believe QT said in another interview, "If they fought in an exhibition in the ring, Bruce would win. If they fought in the jungle, Cliff would win." Fair enough.
I actually think this interview was worse, because QT makes Lee sound like an asshole by making up (or at best, misunderstanding the material from the book) that story about Bruce not respecting stuntmen. Regardless, I'm fine with the movie, but I can see why his family wouldn't necessarily appreciate his depiction.
