Don't worry how popular a movie is. There are no movies you're "supposed" to like, and I will never question any answer, so just speak freely.

Aloha. Y'know Mort, when I saw the title of your thread, before I delved in, the first film that came to mind was your choice of LAWRENCE 0F ARABiA
I've always boringly advocated that all art is subjective, always disliked art snobs etc...... but if I ever lapsed, for me, this may be one of those 'Emperor's new clothes' movies. A bunch us often went to London to see old/classic movies on the big screen like Casablanca, Citizen Kane, North By Northwest and suchlike.
I was really looking forward to this one. Great actors, respected director and awesome music. What was not to like? Keenly looked forward. What could go wrong? A bit like Brian De Palma's Mission To Mars, one might have said. ( LoL)
To cut a long story short....I was quite underwhelmed. I tried, but cannot resist the urge to say...I found it a bit Lean. (sorry)
I still feel David Lean was a great director of the visually spectacular 'set piece' and an undoubtedly talented chap, but for my taste, his movie's strengths were not in 'story telling' I have found a few his movies similar. Sumptuous eye candy, but strangely unsatisfying. Maybe the trait was because of the same team of screenplay writers or perhaps the then norm of shorter lengthed movies. I just feel like if it's about the direction wether auter driven or not, for my taste, others did it better. In this case a feeling that the audience is expected to know or assume why TE Lawrence was charismatic..... without the framing and explanation.
I wouldn't perhaps say 'I don't like' the movie .....more that I have no urge to revisit.

5 of the 9 movies mentioned thus far are in my top 20. Nobody's perfect.
While I'm here, a couple I just don't get into are E.T. and The Wizard of Oz.

I'm opinionated about movies, but I've never asked someone why they did or didn't like a movie rhetorically. I don't think I ever asked, period. It's kinda like food. People like what they like.
I'm very hit-or-miss when it comes to "art-house".. There's some amazing stuff, and there's stuff I don't like... "2001" for example.
I kinda liked David Lean's more smaller, intimate movies like "Ryan's Daughter" (taking the most virile man in Hollywood and turn him into a cuckold) and "Brief Encounter" which I remember being very cute and platonic... I only remember liking one line in "The Bridge On The River Kwai" which I saw only because I spent 9 days on the REAL River KWEI, which is in Kanchanaburi, Thailand while they shot the movie in Sri Lanka. I loved getting my motorbike and riding over the bridge and all over after midnight with hardly any traffic so I could speed.
I love many classics. Probably close to 1,000, but like noir, I'm looking for unique and great movies. There's a ton of great movies from the 1930-70s (especially the latter) that might not be big budgets or very popular, but damn good, especially 70s American movies, and 60s International.
I've barely seen any movies this year because the times I do try, I just feel like it's a xerox of another movie with a different star and a few circumstances. I've probably watched more newer movies and it seems like the ones I like are the ones people haven't seen. The last one was "Paradise: Love".. Very good movie, but I will warn you of the male nudity. I doubt it made much money, but it's about a middle-aged woman who goes to Kenya as a sex tourist. Maren Ade made a nice, yet small and not-too-theatrical, "The Forest For The Trees".

Exorcist Goonies Ferris Bueller Those are poor movies. However, I've never heard anyone say Ferris Bueller is a classic. Only on this website have I ever heard of any fans for the thing.

It's not a film that I hate, but I've just never been able to get into TAXI DRIVER. I've watched it a few times over the years, hoping to gain a new perspective on it, but so far, my attempts have been to no avail. There are several elements of it I like, such as the cast, the setting and the musical score, but it just doesn't come together for me.

Don't like Mary Poppins, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Sound of music isn't that bad but I don't like it. The Godfather is overrated.
