If everybody reached unexpected highs in 2020, everyone hit unexpected lows in 2021. Which team are they closer to being? I'd say 2020, but they are going to have to swallow hard to get out from under the Hosmer and Myers contracts, two guys who have identical 0.8 WARs this year. The starting pitching has to have better luck next year, where only Joe Musgrove came out of the year unscathed. Both Darvish and Snell had stretches where they were great, but both got injured (and Snell stunk early). If they can get good injury luck next year and get Mike Clevinger back, the rotation should be playoff worthy and the bullpen is never a problem. But there are some cuts that absolutely have to be made in the field.

That they are going to end the year with a losing record is unimaginable considering 2020 and how they were through the first 50 games this year . . .

On paper, they are one of the best teams in the league, contender for championship. They don't play the game on paper. ESPN has time 1.6% chance of making the playoff. Not done yet, but might as well treat them as done.

But there are some cuts that absolutely have to be made in the field. Had Darvish, Snell, and Musgrove on my fantasy team. Darvish has sucked most of the year, especially after the crackdown. I have to keep him next year. Snell was so awful I finally spite dropped him. Then he went on a mini-tear, my playoff opponent picked him up, left him on the bench when he was hot, but now Snell's on IL. Whew. Musgrove was weird. Pitched really well before the all-star break but was only 5-7. Has not pitched that well since, but is 6-2. If you remove August, where he pitched better than in July, his ERA went up each month (1.24 to 5.09), his WHIP went up each month (0.66 to 1.57), and his BAA went up each month (.137 to .279). I suppose pitching a no-no in his 2nd start helped his April stats.

He hurt his back afterwards, so I'm hoping that is the explanation and not because of some junk that he could have put on the ball that he can no longer use going forward.

Yu is inconsistent, one good game one stinker. Chris Paddack & Dinelson Lamet get hurt and couldn't contribute. Joe Musgrove is the only reliable one.

They pulled Musgrove too early, Giants HR on the next pitch.
But Giants pulled Gausman early. So the Padres tied it. 2-2 in the 8th.

The Pads still have some nifty prospects. SS CJ Abrams, C Luis Campusano. Their top prospect, P MacKenzie Gore had a ghastly season, but it could just be a hiccup. It's going to be a struggle playing in the same division with the Dodgers and that's compounded with the Giant miracle in San Fran. And the future's never going to be bleak with that Tatis fellow.

They traded away too many prospects but they still should be okay. Rockies and D'Backs will suck for at least a few years and I don't know if the Giants can keep doing it with smoke, magic and mirrors.

The Padres should be fine going forward but they collapsed big time this year, they have one of MLB’s best lineups, no excuse for not making the playoffs.
