Freaky (2020)
It is another case of a movie with a good idea that doesn't do much with it. It has some fun, if lazy commentary on sex and gender and not judging people by what they look like, but overall it is just another slasher movie falling into many of the same boring slasher movie stuff. The characters aren't interesting and neither are the kills and the movie doesn't really do anything with the twist on the genre. It is just The Hot Chick crossed with a slasher movie. That is all you are going to get, with every cliche of both genres. It is a competent movie, it has a good performance from Vince Vaughn and has a few standout scenes, but that is about it. It isn't very funny and it definitely isn't scary or suspenseful.
5.5/10

And yeah, the idea is better than the execution. Vince Vaughn acting like a teenage girl was fun. 6/10 for me.

And yeah, the idea is better than the execution. Vince Vaughn acting like a teenage girl was fun. 6/10 for me. The first scene at the house during breakfast after the switch is an interesting scene and should have went in a direction of what would happen to someone like that if they had a family and a normal life. I am assuming the idea started as "what would happen if a 50 year old slasher killer ended up in the body of a teenage girl." According to this movie, almost nothing interesting. The only scene of any real emotion is the scene in the dressing room. That is a sweet and funny scene and coincidentally talks about the pink shirt thing I asked about a few weeks ago. This is one of the few genuinely good scenes in the movie.

Head of the Family (1996)
This is an extremely shlocky Charles Band directed movie with fun bad acting and an amusing premise, though it is inconsistent in the entertainment department and almost too dumb at times, especially the ending. It is about a small town family of freaks led by a very small man with a giant head. The head of the family is blackmailed by a man to kill the husband of the women he is sleeping with and a bunch of ridiculousness ensues from there.
I will say that the head of the family is a memorable and creepy creation and the actor who plays him actually gives a good performance. It is this character that makes the movie worth watching at all. I will also give the movie credit for a scene near the end that is quite creative and original. It also has one of the sexiest female protagonists I have ever seen in a movie and she shows off her extremely sexy body more than once and for extended periods of time.
If you are a fan of Charles Band direct-to-DVD stuff and know what to expect, then this movie might be worth watching.
6/10

Edge of an Axe (1988), obscure 80s slasher about an axe murderer in a small town. It's not a bad movie, the effects and brutality are decent, but the body count is low. It's a mystery, meaning the plot meanders and there are lots of red herrings, until the last 10 minutes when it all comes together and the killer is revealed.
My Bloody Valentine 3D (2009), this is HBO's "scarier" pick of the day. Lots of familiar faces, bloody opening sequence, good production values, but the gore is all or mostly computer effects and looks crappy.

Count Dracula (1970) This Italian-Spanish-German production is hailed as being more faithful to the Bram Stoker novel than previous Dracula movies at the time. It stars Christopher Lee and he's always been my favorite Dracula. As usual, he's in fine form as the count. Although done on a low budget, it still looks like a handsome production; nice settings and costumes, plus good period detail. But in spite of its good points, Count Dracula is...well...just ordinary. Cult director Jesus Franco doesn't do much with the material to make it good horror, but he sure loves doing those zoom-in shots and close ups of faces. Also, this was not a Hammer production, so that may be part of the problem as well.

Not sure how others feel, but about 4 days in, and for me, the real "job" starts now. The weekend felt like a nice warm up, where I was trying to just figure out where to look for certain unseen titles, and also finding the balance of when I like to watch the movies, how many I would like to see a day, and yeah, I am surely more of a night owl, as watching movies in broad daylight, that is not something I would do much this month. The time is also another reason, and I like to have something to look forward to, even if it might be quite tiresome, from time to time, but it is very motivational and fun to keep following the progress and reading upon what everybody else is watching. Also, good news (for me) two of the suddenly removed channels, feauturing tons of horror movies, are somehow back, and I guess they might have been taken down for a certain time, and got the all clear to come back. However, there is always the possibility one or several might disappear again, and yeah, somehow, I kind of like to put in a bit of "work" to find other promising channels, but sooner or later, one just has to pick out a few films, and then just move on. I'm the same with the night owl tendencies. Just can't watch a movie during daylight hours except for in the cinema. Feels wrong. Night-time is my time to shine. I have so much I want to check out. There's no way I'll get through them all by the 31st. And I don't want to get too burnt out. That happened to me back in 2015. I was watching so many movies I ended up developing a bad headache and had to take some pills before I was able to watch anything on Halloween night. Since then I've been careful to pace myself.

Ghoulies II...watched it...definitely more fun than the first film. I dug the demons designs and how they each kind of had their own vibe to them. Felt very gremlins inspired. So did the first one but this one even more so since it took a lot less of the warlock stuff and a lot more of just mischievous little creatures. Didn't care for the big one coming to eat them at the end. And i thought the humans were mostly jerks...even the ones we were supposed to like. The Collection...didn't realize this was a sequel until after...then i remembered seeing the cover are for the Collector and it makes sense. I thought i mightve seen this one once the opening massacre starts but it was actually that a coworker mentioned this film to me years ago and talked about that club scene...so when i saw it i thought i had seen it but its all based on the memory of a conversation. Weird how that works. Anyway...too much torture for my taste but not bad overall. Its also from the early 2010s and torture flicks were all the rave. I dont think ive seen the collector so maybe ill add that one to my list...even tho it'd be working backwards. Told you. I agree about the giant one at the end. It was too silly, even compared to the rest of the movie. I got a kick out of the human characters though, even if some of them were jerks. The Collection is mediocre imo, but not terrible.

I was watching so many movies I ended up developing a bad headache and had to take some pills before I was able to watch anything on Halloween night. Since then I've been careful to pace myself. Oh yeah, I was planning on watching 4-5 films last night, and after barely 2, I felt kind of "exhausted". Not because they were boring or terrible, but I had just a few hours earlier had a intense and tough running excersise outdoors, probably not gotten enough food afterwards, and I began feeling sleepy 30-40 minutes into the first film, and by the 3rd (which I ended up falling asleep to), I just could not stay awake anymore. Of course, that last one, which I might try to watch this day, includes lots of adds and commercials, and which showed up, only after about 3 minutes in, and then 5, and then 8 and, I would never be done with that, if that is how hectic these adds appear, seemingly all the time. Anyway, I clocked in 2 more films, but going on, 3-4 films a day (or more), that is just something I would probably manage during the weekends, not so much during the weekdays. Still, I guess I will just take one day at a time, and see where it takes me. I am as motivated as ever, but sometimes that is not enough, and the body and mind might need a little rest, every now and then. Watching too many bad/mediocre films in a hurry, sure takes its toll, but at least I got to see two rather good/enjoyable last night. Anyway, good luck with your horror movie watch, and as it has been said earlier, make sure to focus more on the fun part, not just the work part.

The Puppet Masters (1994; Stuart Orme) was my first rewatch for this year's challenge. While apparently not a particularly popular film I remembered it being a solid B-movie and it holds up well. Sure, it does focus a bit too much on derivative action scenes, but British TV director Stuart Orme makes the most of his limited budget, the alien creatures are suitably disgusting and Donald Sutherland is good as usual. 6.5/10

What I remembered was Donald Sutherland, some helicopter scenes, and well, that I should give it a go, sooner or later. Might do so, this month, as it sounds enjoyable for a sci-fi/horror release of that era.

Slaxx (2020) - for a film about a pair of Bollywood loving killer jeans, this was a lot better than it had any right to be. 6.5/10

Rewatching The Forrest with Natalie Dormer i mis remember the ending. My brain said that the ending was a split personality thing however rewatching it her twin feeling "nothing" makes me see she/the twin was real.

Glad I didn’t wait to make it the new Candyman or else I’d have been a bit disappointed.

Watched People Toys on youtube...aka Devil Times Five aka The Horrible House on the Hill....its a 70s slasher that features an escaped group of children who all have their own eccentricities stumbling upon a rich guys vacation home in the mountains. It's a lot of weird slow motion with classic 70s soundtrack vibes for too much of the film honestly...but children are fun and their interactions and reactions to things can be hilarious. I struggle with the production quality sometimes with movies like this. They can feel so very poor.

She Dies Tomorrow (2020)
A very good existential and borderline nihilistic horror movie about an idea that spreads that we are going to die tomorrow. It touches on how fleeting life is and human beings' bloated sense of self-worth and kind of puts things in perspective. It doesn't have a traditional story and sort of just jumps around from character to character and back again. It is a surreal psychological horror movie that uses subtle gallows humor quite well. The main character keeps talking about how she wants her skin to be used to make a jacket when she dies. Reading between the lines I see it as being about not taking the short time we have for granted. We are just a blink in eternity and we are lucky even for that. Life might have no objective meaning, but it means something to us.
8/10

Definitely an interesting movie with thought provoking themes. I'd give it 7/10 now.

Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (1981)
This is a solid horror movie for the most part, but devolves into complete trash in the final act. Instead of leading to an interesting conclusion, it just leads to a full blown slasher movie. The last act is still entertaining in how crazy it is, it is just disappointing compared to the first 2/3 of the movie.
6.5/10
