I just watched Candyman (2021). Visually this was great to look at, but thats all it has going for it. Its like they didnt know if they were going for a reboot or a sequel. And the lead character is really boring and flat. And only a few seconds of a cgi Tony Todd, are you fucking kidding me... Pretty much my sentiments. The film peaked with its reverse skyline shot during the opening credits. That shot with the score behind it was perfect...but after that things all go downhill.

Watched Deepstar Six (1989), meh, eye candy actors but light on the monster and terror.

Army of Darkness....this is seriously peak Ash. He is so badass here. The plot and setting lean into it imo. Its easily the least scary but it makes up for it in every other way. So good.
Return of the Living Dead 3...some nice legs on occasion...i didn't mind the idea that an infected uses pain to quench their thirst for a time. Leans into the body horror element. But everything else about it is just so much worse than the first Return of the Dead. It has that classic 90s made for tv feel to it in every element other than the gore (which is just too bloody for tv). It's easy to say Ill never deliberately watch this one again, lol.

Friday the 13th part III (1982), despite being a longtime horror fan I'm not very familiar with the F13 franchise and only relatively late in life watched the early ones. This one makes no sense. There is a lot of time spent on character development that goes nowhere because they all die, plot elements with no payoff, a random gang that amounts to filler, very little sex and nudity, and the kills aren't very creative. It's not Camp Crystal Lake, Jason doesn't have any motivation and there is no rhyme or reason to his behavior. There is some subplot about the main girl that is never resolved. It's not a good slasher and adds nothing to the franchise.

Yesterday I watched Idle Hands (1999). When it first came out I really liked this film, I even owned it on VHS. Watching it now decades later, I hate it. Devon Sawa really annoyed me in this. The soundtrack is very cool though.

I'd say it's an improvement on Part 2 and one of the stronger entries in the series. And unlike most, I favour it over The Final Chapter. I also like the disco-type soundtrack and the ending. It does have its boring parts, but that's true of most entries in this franchise.

Love that disco version of the theme too! First sequel filmed outside of New England, so lacks that upstate NY veneer of authenticity. That Chris backstory related to Jason is also dropped like a hot potato and is never really resolved. We do get that hockey mask, at last, however.

Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), not much to say except I enjoyed it more than Part III. The kills are better. They again have 2 groups that lightly interact for no purpose. Nudity is mild. Blood is mild. I give them credit for far better continuity than the Halloween franchise. I didn't hate 3 or 4, they just don't have rewatch value for me, but you know how that goes, I'll probably rewatch them in 10 years.
#31
Flatliners (1990), rewatch but I haven't seen it since the 90s. I found it more compelling then.

But it does have a big impact on the franchise as it’s the movie that gives Jason his hockey mask. I found the gang fun, but the rest of the characters forgettable. It had a few decent kills including the killing of a pregnant woman, which hardly ever gets mentioned. The 3D elements hurt it in the long run. I don’t know if you plan to continue the Friday franchise but 4-6 actually do have plot elements that pay off. It’s probably my favorite chunk of Friday films.

Sarge I’ll also mention that Jason stalks Crystal Lake and the area around it…not just the summer camp. And in later films he really gets around winding up in both New York City and even Space! But that’s several films down the line.

I've seen those two actually, way back around the time they came out. IIRC, the NYC one is where he's revived with lightning. And Space has the famous scene of him killing the girl in a sleeping bag.
What pregnant woman was killed in Part III?

Close. Part 6 he’s revived by lightning, part 8 (NYC) he’s revived by an electrical wire at the bottom of the lake. Jason X (space) does have a sleeping bag kill…which he first uses in Part 7. The girl who showers and then is stabbed from underneath in the hammock. She was pregnant. Her boyfriend is the handstand guy.

The Child (1977) A young girl has the ability to raise the dead. She can command her small army of zombies to do her bidding at will, especially when it comes to eliminating people who she perceives are a threat to her.
This was done on a very low budget, reportedly for $30,000, and it shows. It's obvious the dialogue had to be dubbed during post-production. And it took three years for the movie to be completed, due to funding issues. Also it was filmed using "short ends" which means they used rolls of film stock previously left over from other movies; another way of cutting costs.
So overall, I thought The Child wasn't nearly as bad as it could have been; I've seen a lot worse horror movies. But it's not all that good, either. Some scenes drag on way too long (apparently the director thought showing somebody taking a long walk in the woods was suspenseful) and at times it gets too talky. On the plus side, it makes good use of atmosphere and there's a particularly freaky scene involving a jack-o'-lantern. The zombie scenes were also effective.

Class of 1999 Basically RoboCop + The Terminator + The Principle. What I took away from this movie is, incompetently run corporations that use unpredictable robots to bring order to schools in areas run by violent gangs will ironically actually solve all of the problems, through a series of events that lead said killer robots to kill most of the gang members and cause a truce between the remaining gang members and then kill almost all of the rest of them too. The movie is somewhat amusing, but that is the best I can say about it. 5.5/10

This obscure, yet ultimately strange British chiller is easily my best first time viewing thus far. It left me with more questions than answers. Mainly thanks to its very ambiguous, and disconnected storytelling foreshadowed by ominous premonitions and symbolic images. It’s particularly slow, and very little happens, but I found it engagingly hypnotic and visually haunting. That climax, while foreseeable is magnificently executed. Probably what you call a horror mood piece.

Had my annual horror movie night with the fam yesterday. Watched a lot of classics...Nightmare on Elm Street, Scream....Friday the 13th part 7 (we've been watching an entry or two each year for the past couple. This is how far we've gotten.) Rob Zombies Halloween...which i hadn't watched in a while and i still really enjoy kid Michael in the first half. It's not the blank slate of evil that the original concept was but it's still entertaining. And 5ive Girls...which is kind of meh, but pretty raunchy as a catholic school for troubled girls kind of thing. Theres a lot of underwear shot, some flirtation between a priest and his students, a lesbian love story, some spanking with a ruler. A little more nudity and it might qualify as actual porn.
All in all a good days work.

I onde dager (2021) (aka The Trip), Norwegian action/horror/comedy, definitely one of the more entertaining movies of my October. A film director and his actress wife spend the weekend in a remote cabin, unaware that each plan to murder the other, but are soon fighting together to save their lives. Well cast, well-acted and directed, funny, gruesome at times although I could have handled a bit more gore. Netflix
