Does anyone know what they're going to start the challenge off with first? For me, a long overdue rewatch of Pumpkinhead this Friday is in order. I snagged the Scream Factory steelbook earlier in the year and can't wait to give it a look. Perfect atmospheric horror to get the mood started. I was thinking of making my first movie A Quiet Place Part II.

Is it streaming anywhere yet? Amazon Prime. Nice. I’ve got a lot of new views queued up on Prime. I don’t have it on my primary tv so I rarely use it.

I snagged the Scream Factory steelbook earlier in the year and can't wait to give it a look. Perfect atmospheric horror to get the mood started. Probably aim for 2 or 3 films to begin. Probably start off the evening with a forgotten late 90s slasher The Clown at Midnight. Some interesting faces in the cast. Then later that night the ghost tale Grave Secrets. Looks slow-burn, but hopefully a good atmosphere builder.

I snagged the Scream Factory steelbook earlier in the year and can't wait to give it a look. Perfect atmospheric horror to get the mood started. I sure did not exactly start on last years challenge, with a big "BANG", when it came to the titles I ended up with. However, I did always try to pick out a few, either of those I had seen before or the unseen, but which looked or sounded promising. As I felt it was important, to even out the things, so it was not just too many below mediocre or just plain bad films, that would soon ruin my motivation and lust for keep on going. Anyway, I gotta say, I do have a few films, but since I am up early the next day (friday morning) I will probably just watch 1 film (as an introduction/opener), and keep thinking of re-watching one of the Dracula (Hammer horror) releases with Christopher Lee, and the weather outside (seemingly will last for the end of the week or longer) is the perfect match to go, with golden leaves on the trees outside, it rains constantly, and is grey and gets dark and colder, earlier and earlier, each day. So yeah, I am in the mood for horror films now, but will try (I guess I might keep repeating myself there) to be a bit more picky, about what I chose from my first time views, specially those I find or "stumble" upon, through different streaming or internet services. Pumpkinhead, now that is surely one which lives up the atmospheric mood, and one I am really thinking about holding onto, until maybe the last weekend of the month, where I will do my best to save up, and maybe find a few potential unseen gems, to keep me occupied from friday to sunday 29-31th October.

First one i couldn't wait to get into was Malignant. I really really liked it. It was really weird and in mostly all good ways. I keep seeing the film Basket Case get thrown around as similar...i havent seen Basket Case but i HAVE see The Dark Half. Malignant was very much in line with the Dark Half, written by Stephen King btw. Definitely want to rewatch it soon to see all the things i probably missed. The Gabriel action scenes are a show stealer.
Then i went to familiar ground with 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later. Days ive always loved. I probably rewatch it every year and it still holds up tremendously. Weeks i never cared for...but this time around i appreciated it a lot more. I think if it had presented the kids as our protagonists the entire time, instead of falsely thinking their parents were, Id enjoy it even more. It isn't until the mayhem starts that all the sudden you realize the kids are our main characters. I did enjoy that too...that the movie relentlessly rolls through characters. Nobody is safe. Also Imogen Poots looked really pretty and hers is a name ive heard for a decade but i could never put a face to...well now i put a face to it.

Also ive been up since 3am with a cough. Went to get covid tested...negative but still feel like garbage. The early rise allowed me to get a few more in than normal. I plan on watching horror flicks on the couch until i pass out from all the robitussin....which may be soon. Good luck everyone.

#1 this year was Malignant and 4/10 for me. Too long, too much dialog, too much plot, one or two good kills. Horror is an emotion, this tried to tell me a scary story with too many words.

Started the challenge off with two average horror movies.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020) The continuing post-apocalyptic saga of those long-armed monsters that attack when loud noises are made. I was hoping they would step it up with this sequel, but the story didn't really go anywhere and was often draggy. The first movie was such a unique premise, but with this continuation the novelty starts to wear off.
Blood From The Mummy's Tomb (1971) A young woman is possessed by the spirit of an ancient Egyptian queen. If this storyline sounds familiar that's because it was also done as The Awakening (1980). Both films were based on Bram Stoker's novel The Jewel of Seven Stars. This Hammer production has a couple of good scenes and a terrific ending, but is mostly ho-hum.

Cannot say I started off with a "bang" this year either. However, I made it to around 4 films last night, planned on one more, but yeah, when the average rating lied around 4/10, time began to stand still, and there was no way in hell, I was gonna just watch another poor film, to be done with it. Instead I will try (really this time) to be more lucky with what I see the next days, as I can easily swallow a few of these stinkers, every now and then, but far too many, and too often. Yeah, that is surely a way of overdoing it, and the wrong way, at least for my part.

Yeah, that is surely a way of overdoing it, and the wrong way, at least for my part. Absolutely. You want it to be fun first and foremost. Watching 100 stinkers you’ll never want to watch again isn’t as fun as 40 memorable and fun ones. Most of the time I wind up defaulting to ones I’ve already seen if I watch a few that were meh.

Most of the time I wind up defaulting to ones I’ve already seen if I watch a few that were meh. Sometimes it sure do feels like one is just on a constant bad run, but yeah, today I will try hard to pick out (at least one or two, I know is worth the time) a winner, and then just see where it takes me. Still, the good news, is that we are 2 days in, and over 4 weeks left, and it is a challenge, so I always think that it should be a bit of work and not all fun, but too much work, and too little fun, well, I guess it is all down finding the right balance. I would be very happy, if I could dig out a few new and unseen gems, or re-watch a few, that might not have impressed or been given solid rating, yet you sensed something better where there, and which might fare better with another go. Also, I like to save my favorites or try to build up a list of 5-10 potential good/great films, to watch during the last weekend of the month. Anyway, I will try to look at how peoples list and progress moves on, checking up if I can find some interesting titles, and maybe see if they might be worthy to see.

Finished last night off with Ghoulies...went my whole life never seeing it. I think the demon in the toilet imagery told me everything i needed to know but i figured since theyre available id check them off the list. There isn't much to write home about here. The acting is bad...i got the feeling the film wanted to be played for laughs but it didn't do a good enough job. The ghoulies arent menacing at all. I kind of hoped theyd grow as they killed people and become full sized demons by the end or something. This felt like a Gremlins ripoff and i have no idea which came first. Mariska Hargitay showed off some great legs in a few nice dresses tho. So it did have that going for it. Couldnt find a good pic to use but heres her face... Im gonna check out the sequel at some point. Fright Night 2011....Man did they miss the mark with a lot of this. They lose all the seduction of the original Jerry Dandridge with Colin Farrells version. Jerry is supposed to have the ability to make you want to be with him. Or at least make it seem like hes coercing you via some supernatural powers. Not just forcefully trapping you in a pool or grabbing you on a dance floor and biting your neck. Where was the seduction? Bah. I didn't even do this on purpose but i realized a few minutes in that Imogen Poots is in this as well...after finally noticing her in 28 Weeks Later. Awesome. She really is a looker. Except when her mouth gets all toothy. But overall ill stick with the original if i want to watch a good vampire flick.

Fright Night (the remake) just did not do it for me, but I tried to go in, not with too much expectations, and yeah. A very forgettable updated version, not terrible, just something very "random" about it. Doubt I will ever re-watch it, but I did notice it got at least once straight to DVD sequel, but probably not something to bother with. I did re-watch the Ghoulies films (at least the first two that is) during the 2017 Horror Challenge, and I think I rated both with 5/10s. The sequel is probably the better, yet I enjoyed the cheese which sure came often, and just the whole house/mansion and party going vibe, the ridiculous chanting/screaming part, and yeah, I might try to re-watch the third (and maybe "finally" see the 4th one, as well) later this month. Agree that Mariska was quite a babe, sadly I tend to end up being reminded of her grumpy and moody older version, whenever I turn on the tv late at night, as she seems to always appear in one of those crime police shows, and she just looks so angry and yeah, a long shot away of the sweet and charming version from the Ghoulies. But of course, that was a couple of decades ago, but I like to be reminded of the younger version, not the other way around.

Damn, it is not going to be "easy", as I just remembered a few spanish films from the 90s, made by the director of The Last Circus (2010), and hoped would be under the horror genre. Turned out, they were not. Well, I guess I will just leave them out for now, as I have not time to "waste" on films which are not gonna be included, and I did that (I think last year), and yeah, my aim is only horror films, more or less, the entire month. Gonna be tough, because, some films I really wanna see, and kept thinking, all this blood, gore and violence, must be under the horror tag, right? No, action, comedy, fantasy, sci-fi and so on, but no horror. Anyway, I usually try out Letterboxd, IMDb, Wikipedia to look up unseen but very interesting films, and to check out which kind of genre they lie under, so I do not end up with a film about 90-100 minutes of time, and then the next day, when I am about to rate it, finds out that I cannot put into the list, as it turns out it is not a horror release.

Ah man, I hate when that happens. Sometimes I notice IMDb changes the genre of movies. I remember Cube always had the horror tag(along with sci fi), or Misery.

The moment that ruined the Fright Night remake for me was when they didn’t even try to make an updated dance sequence between Jerry and Amy. Now that I think about it I don’t recall them alluding to Amy having a likeness to Jerry’s old love interest either. Nor was there a day time familiar. The more I think on it the less I like it.
