Here's a lovely interview you might enjoy with Jane Fonda and David Letterman. Like Denzel Washington, Fonda always seemed to click straight in to gear with Letterman when they got together, and appreciated his sense of humour.

Above all I look for sensitivity, subtlety, registering delicate shifts in awareness and emotion while inhabiting the character. There are many fine performances among the winners but Many of my favorites are among the nominees or non OSCARED
Best Actor Marlon Brando ON THE WATERFRONT. Close second PAUL Lukas WATCH ON THE RHINE Both very delicate performances, Lukas’ perhaps the more difficult because he had to adjust it from his stage performance
Best actress Olivia de Havilland. THE HEIRESS closely followed by Sally Field in NORMA RAE. SALLY ‘ is a Tour de Force, but Olivias is an complex arc brilliantly delineated.
Best Supporting Actor George Sanders in ALL ABOUT EVE
Best Supporting Actress. Ruth Gordon in ROSEMARY’s BABY Lots of great performances in this category but many , like Shelley Winters, give one note tour de force performances. Brilliant but … Gordon makes Minnie a rounded character, a humorous villain, middle class, common place and devoted to evil.

Watch on the Rhine is far from a perfect film, and most of the fault is in Bette Davis’ scenery chewing, a rare case of her failing to tone her part to the production. On Stage her character was played by Mady Christians. It’s an ensemble piece led By Lukas and Lucille Watson. DAVIS’ heavy handed performance un balances the ensemble. To his everlasting credit Lukas stays on course , refusing to be overthrown by Bette’s rambunctious behavior.
The children are good, more because of the way they are written. Lucille Watson and George Couloris , as the Washington Widow of a famous diplomat and Coukoris as a houseguest angling for an income, are excellent, both repeating their stage performances. Like Lukas they both dial it back successfully, managing gestures , facial expressions and tone beautifully. I
The film has a lot to say about drawing lines in dealing with the fascist threat. It’s the kind of tough decision that had to be made throughout Europe in the 30’s and 40’s. The brilliance lay in moving this dilemma to and American living room, demonstrating that failure to draw distinctions has real world consequences. Lukas is the best character. It s a full blown ,rounded portrait of a man committed to a moral fight, not heroic, not dramatic, an ordinary man who feels compelled to take extraordinary action. Hope you can see it.

Live all these but they are all lead actresses playing support roles not that that matters. It’s just interesting.
I love Claire Trevor but her scene in Dead End was even more remarkable not sure if she was nominated
Same with Dame Peggy Ashcroft in 39 Steps lovely performance , with just a few sides to present a fully fleshed out woman. You knew her back story, you knew what her life would be from then on unless she left.

Yes, Marsha -- there is a Santa Claus.
Oops, I mean there was an Oscar nomination for Claire Trevor in DEAD END.
She was beaten to the prize by Alice Brady (in IN OLD CHICAGO).
But the statue was finally hers (to have and to hold from that day forward) a decade later.
She just had to sing 'Moanin' Low' (badly) to receive it.

Vivien in STREETCAR, Fonda in KLUeTE and Patricia Neal in HUD were my HMs for actress from the classic era (pre1970) ish (I'm allowing flexibility in Fonda's case because it is one of the greatest performances committed to cellulod) I agree on Patricia Neal in HUD, but haven't seen KLUTE, so far. Do see KLUTE Bella, it's one it's one of the great films of the seventies, and a superbly cast Fonda, as Bree; displaying confidence, strength and vulnerability (sometimes all in one beat) delivers one of the most unforgettable characters of the era. Time hasn't dimmed KLUTE's dark kick. It's an American essential. If you've seen Pakula's ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN and THE PARALLAX VIEW, you owe it to yourself to see this one too.
