Who do you cast as Macbeth? Nowadays I always felt someone like Samantha Morton would be an interesting choice, and perhaps Kate Hepburn or Maybe an left field choice like Talluluh Bankhead as well perhaps.

Olivera Markovic plays Katerina Izmajlowa in Siberian Lady Macbeth (1962) dir: Andrzej Wajda based on Nikolai Leskov's novel. Not one of the director's best efforts, though. An English film also based on Leskov's novel, Lady Macbeth dir: William Oldroy appeared in 2016. Florence Pugh plays Katharine. My copy has such poor soundtrack, coupled with its barbaric Yorkshire accents, that I have not watched it yet. More celebrated than either is Shostakovich's opera, Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, which also exists in various filmed versions.

I would be happy to see a female Macbeth. On PBS, I saw a all-woman production of Julius Caesar, a video of a West End hit from a few seasons ago. It was staged as a play-within-a- play. The conceit was that we were watching JC as acted by inmates of a woman’s prison. It was excellent.
From the classic era:
Barbara Stanwyck Betty Davis Flora Robson Ida Lupino
Currently Active:
Francis MacDormand (who will be playing Lady Macbeth in the film about to be released) Meryl Streep (she doesn’t suck) Laura Dern Sophie Okonedo

These are perfect. For me the question with Macbeth is who exactly is the driving force.? In the 2014 Kenneth Branagh version he was the driver with Alex Kingston as a strong partner supporting his plan. In many productions it is lady Macbeth who gens him up to do the deed which was suggested by the witch’s prophecy. Each of these ladies have played prime movers in a Scheme, Bette and Flora in their various outings as Queen Elizabeth, Stanwyck in Double Indemnity among many others, and Ida LUPINO in Ladies in Retirement for one.
To be Macbeth they need to have the suggestion made , then be encouraged to act, then to fall apart while her partner, more imaginative and sensitive , outwardly stays the course but inwardly crumbles. Olivia DeHavilland , based on her part in HUSH HUSH SWEET CHARLOTTE is a perfect fit. Meryl Streep and Sally field would do this very well, Field egged on by James Garner or Paul Newman. Joanne Woodward would be great With Newman. For Meryl Why not Dustin Hoffman, or Diane Keaton as her partner.
