I can't recall when I last used one. But, I recently heard of an online service that can direct you to a pay-phone in your area. I think it's called the "Pay Phone Project." Or, you can Google "active pay phones near me." This is for the U.S..
I'm not sure if this service includes free calls, as they do in Australia.

Last time was right before cellphones came out. I stopped outside of Charleston at an gas station and they had one of these weird looking European like payphones instead of a regular looking one.
