everyone has that one movie you liked as a kid but when you grow up you realize was pretty bad and for me the 1999 Inspector Gadget fits that bill. I mean its filled with totally random unfunny humor, mean spirited moments, a terrible portrayal of Dr Claw, and absolutely HORRENDOUS editing. Also some weird foot fetish plot. WTF was Disney thinking getting the director of COOL AS ICE to make their 90m Inspector Gadget movie???
I do like the WarGames reunion with Broderick and Dabney Coleman though, and I will always have a soft spot for this song

Yeah it’s pretty awful. We did get two Joely Fishers in that one scene.

It seemed more like the writer and director wanted to make a kid-friendly version of RoboCop and just stuck Inspector Gadget references in to tie it to the cartoon. And I don't know what the hell was with Rupert Everett's character but he was not a faithful rendition of Doctor Claw.

I enjoyed it and the sequel when I was a kid, but it's been probably 15 years since I've seen either of them.

It's a silly kids movie. It's basically a live action cartoon, similar to movies like George of the Jungle and Dudley Do-Right.
I enjoyed it for it's campiness. Insepctor Gadget vs Robo Gadget was fun. And both Rupert Everrt and Mattew Broderick chew the scenery.
It also features a beautiful Joely Fisher.

Harry Knowles had a pretty epic take down of the movie when it was released in 1999... link

I heard the direct to video sequel with French Stewart was worse It was a lot closer to the cartoon, but it was a much less competently made film.

I heard the direct to video sequel with French Stewart was worse Well it’s not good but from what I remember I might actually take it over the first. French Stewart was a better fit for Inspector Gadget and it was just a clean, wholesome, family film

Now that I think about it, Broderick was such an odd choice, not sure why they went with him, there's so many better other options. Besides the afforementioned Stewart, Jim Carrey would have been the best choice at the time (he was the biggest comedy star at the time and does a lot of slapstick/physical comedy). Robin Williams would have also been a good choice. Hell say what you will about Adam Sandler, even he would have been a better casting choice.

Even as a little kid, I remember going to see it and wondering why they cast someone who was so different from the cartoon character. Carrey or maybe Dan Aykroyd would have been much better choices.

Carrey was wanted when the Farrelly brothers were gonna direct it and Chase was wanted when Spielberg was gonna direct. My guess is Broderick was Simba before this and the filmmakers thought “well kids loved simba. Let’s put Simba as Gadget.”

Didn't the guy that directed Cool as Ice also do the cinematography for Schindler's List?
