One of the most beautiful poems ever written. A documentary I watched not long ago stated he was not likely the author, but it doesn't really matter, the devotion and love within WAS his life.

Well the guy bragged about never having taken a bath. He considered an unwashed body a stinking badge of piety.

Well the guy bragged about never having taken a bath. He considered an unwashed body a stinking badge of piety. What a coincidence!!! Baseball players brag about never washing their baseball outfits. They consider unwashed laundry a stinking badge of winning games.

Well the guy bragged about never having taken a bath. He considered an unwashed body a stinking badge of piety. That proves what exactly?
Also exact recorded quote or it never happened.

Also exact recorded quote or it never happened. It's just a BTW since we were speaking about Francis of Assisi. It's not meant to prove anything at all.

What was your purpose in posting this? It's an interesting historical perspective of Christianity of 1200'ds day and honestly it's been stuck in my head ever since I've read about it some 25 years ago.
There's a story, I don't know if it's true, that he went to Muslim ruled Spain to teach them about Christianity. Naturally, the the quite cleanly Muslims could smell him a mile off and thought he was a stark raving madman and treated him kindly, without really listening to him. So while he went back and told people how he taught them, the Muslims where making Cuckoo gestures behind his back.
As I said, I don't know if it's true, but I can believe it. And it's a very funny story.

Hauling enough water to fill a tub was fraught with some danger before "modern" plumbing. Many people would drown when going to a local body of water.
You were lucky if there was a reasonable body of water nearby.

Francis' own townsfolk made Cuckoo gestures right in front of him, including his own father who disowned him. So, I do not think he objected to Muslims doing it to him.
