Admin Can we move this topic back to the politics board? I don’t understand why we need to have two threads here about the sexuality of Superman’s son. Edit: Merging the topics wasn’t exactly what I had in mind, but whatever.

You know what? Upon thinking about this further, I have to ask: why is this so controversial? It’s not even like Jon Kent is a longtime character with an extensive history of being straight. The character first appeared in 2015, and as far as I’m aware, almost no focus was placed on the character’s love life in the past. Unless you just can’t stand seeing queer people in fiction, I’m not sure why this is worth getting up in arms about. If anything, this seems like a pretty safe choice on DC’s part.

I don't care, but I wonder to what extent this is just a publicity stunt. Incite the conservative outrage mob for free advertising. I wonder when they'll learn to stop taking the bait.

I think this is a genius move that will re-establish "Superman" as the top seller comic book it was in the Forties.
Because let's face it: this is a very original, subtle and definitely cool "gimmick".
Kudos to DC Comics. God bless America.

Because people have been conditioned to believe that straight, white, cis, male is the default for any character in fiction and should remain that way. And any deviation from that is merely pandering or superficial.

I don’t even recall this kind of backlash when Catwoman, Wonder Woman and Harley Quinn were made queer, so evidently, there seems to be a double standard.

It was discussed in Chasing Amy almost 30 years ago. Unfortunately, it's still a thing.

My guess is that it's because there's quite the announcement about Jon Kent being bi. If they didn't announce it, didn't make a big fuss about it and just developed it in the comics for readers to discover for themselves, then there really wouldn't be a backlash. Or at least it wouldn't be that big of a backlash imo. Catwoman's and Wonder Woman's sexual preferences didn't come with announcements if I'm not mistaken.

In the case of Wonder Woman, I recall that her being bisexual was revealed in an interview by Greg Rucka.
