SPOILERS!!!
NO Time To Die
So did I enjoy the movie? Sure. Like Pizza, even bad Bond is still pretty good. Not saying this was bad per se, but it wont go down as one of my favorites. It's not one of my favorites even of the Daniel Craig Bond's (Those being Casino Royale and Skyfall).
So what's my issue? Bond has a formula. You cant mess with the formula too much and still call it Bond (we all know what the Bond formula is, no need to go over it again). Now, that formula might be old, archaic even, definitely showing its years, but its a formula that works for this character. Bond has to be devil may care, or else he cant risk his life all the time and still be somewhat sane. The Brosnan version of Bond said it best in Goldeneye: "I take pleasure in great beauty".
This Bond didn't do that. He was morose the whole time. That's part of what made Quantum of Solace such a "meh" Bond movie too. A mopey Bond we do not want.
Then of course there are the other things we don't want Bond to ever do.
He falls in love FOR REALS. He has a kid. And of course he dies. WTF? Bond doesn't die. That's the whole point. Its a series. He doesn't die because we all know there's going to be another one. And even now, with the Craig version dying, we still know there's going to be more Bond. So what was the point of that? It's like Daniel Craig, who was a producer on this one, was just DYING (see what I did there?) to do something different with Bond; So he demanded they write these non-Bond things into Bond.
They even gave the 007 title to someone else?
Here's the thing: Jason Bourne doesn't have much of a formula (other than that his memory is effed up) so you can do things like that with him. Ethan Hunt (Mission Impossible) has a formula, but it includes falling in love and potentially having a family (see MI3), etc.
But none of these are Bond. In their attempt to do something different with Bond they went so far a field that I felt like I wasn't watching Bond.
Where was the tongue in cheek humor? Where was the romance? There were hardly any gags either.
I didn't hate the movie. There are parts that are downright fun, but I didn't want Bond to "go out" like this.
Opinions?
