Is it to 'protect' pitchers ? Enhance offence? Artifically create higher scores ? All of the above ?

Protect pitchers, avoid pitchers having to bat, avoid pitchers having to practice batting, enhance offense, avoid "almost-guaranteed-outs," etc.

To bastardize the game into something inferior.

To give David Ortiz a career.

Prevent pitchers, who would not otherwise be major league hitters, from hitting.
I prefer no DH.

To bastardize the game into something inferior. I think this too. Instead of having a pitcher that doesn't bat, I see it as having a batter that doesn't field - which is ridiculous. The only thing I can think of which is more stupid is a double switch where a "DH" player comes in, makes first, then is switched for a "pinch runner". So not only can't he field, presumably he can't run either. And he probably earns 100 times a year what any of us mere mortals do......

It was brought in during a period where offense was low, and pitching was dominant. I am in two minds about it. I like the traditions of the game, but nothing worse than the pitcher coming up to bat in a big spot with men on and 2 outs. Considering how many times pitchers flail at three strikes and go down meekly, I think I'm siding with the pro-DH side.

His only skill was hitting a ball with a stick very far -- he couldn't run, he couldn't field, and he couldn't even really hit until he started dipping into the juice.

How about "Pitchers got enough to worry about"?

he couldn't even really hit until he started dipping into the juice. So Ortiz was just another Boston cheater?

And as far as I'm aware, subs have in baseball for just as long as the DH.

That's like saying 2 generations have grown up with leaded gasoline, better keep that too.
