The only reason people remember this comedy is because of its controversial blackface portrayal by its white star C. Thomas Howell. Spike Lee apparently made a big deal out of the blackface controversy when it first came out which got the attention of the NAACP. Of course many years later we had Robert Downey Jr. dress in black face for "Tropic Thunder".
