I have strong opinions on this. Rap is the destruction of R&B music.
Sure, it can be very clever and the lyrics rise to the level of poetry. But it has become a monolith which has steamrolled musical and lyrical innovation in favor of rhetoric.
I can only go so long before I want that guy to stop yammering.

had a good or bad influence on society of the world? Popular music is always meant to be a somewhat subversive and anti-authoritarian, so that part I don't mind. But there is one aspect of it that I do take some issue with... Spelling and pronunciation of language. When kids hear this they think this is the way words and phrases are really spelled and or pronounced. They learn more from this about language than they do from their teachers in school. In that sense there is the dumbing down of culture. I once met a kid who honestly thought the word THE was spelled DA. He had no concept of the TH. THE is a basic kindergarten word for crying out loud!

THE is a basic kindergarten word for crying out loud! Let's not denounce that entirely. Language does evolve and change despite whatever grammar rules we try to instill it with. Heck, "the" used to be spelled with a "y" and a small "e" above it.

It's time for it to die and be replaced by music again. People talk too much anyway. Some people just need to STFU.

The same can be said for rock music. That's no reason for a genre to die. Nor to deny it's place as music. Rap is music as much as any other genre.

Rap is a vocal style, not a "genre". The musical subgenre is actually Hip Hop.
So rock is not comparable to rap. There is rap rock. Run DMC is a good example of rap rock.
Hip Hop is a subgenre of R&B.
Rock can range from folk rock to punk. There is no such range in Hip Hop. Compare rock to jazz or blues or R&B. It's useless to compare it to rap vocals.
Hip Hop has an anti-creative emphasis on vocals and largely ignores the instrumental.
We've been doing this for 50 years and it's gotten old. Time to place emphasis on the music in R&B again, not the egotistical yapping of the lead vocalist.

We've been doing this for 50 years and it's gotten old. Time to place emphasis on the music in R&B again, Genre is the perfect comparative here. It'd be like saying there is no rock genre since singing is just a vocal style. blog.landr.com/rap-styles/There are plenty of subgenres of rap. So no, there's no need for rap to die any more than there is a need for rock to die. It hasn't gotten old. It's still younger than other genres and styles of music. It's fine. Sounds like plenty of rock vocalists, too.

No, I gave you an example of rap used in rock. Rap is not a genre. The genre is Hip Hop.
It's still talking as opposed to singing. And as such it inhibits innovation in music.
It's a clever style to be used sparingly - not for 50 years as a commercial substitute for good music composition.

No, rap is a genre. Just like rock. It's not just talking. There's rhythm and rhyme to it. The very heart of music innovation. Plus, saying it's just talking is ignoring rappers who do in fact sing. It's a clever style to be used whenever an artist sees fit. 50 years is just the beginning. People used to think rock was not good for commercial music either. Rap has incorporated some great musical compositions.

I’m a 63 year old white man from London so I’m maybe not part of the target audience but I wish it wasn’t so prevalent. Well shit, I don't blame you. There's nothing more embarrassing than a British person trying to act gangsta. As for the states, I think rap's influence has kinda faded? I can't remember the last time I saw a dude's pants sagging. The thug lifestyle was always a larp, and crime rates continue to decline. I don't even see fucked up grammar and spelling much anymore.

Our young folk have Grime and all the other urban based sub genres.
