Growing up, my Dad was the main chef at Thanksgiving, and I really enjoyed helping. After he died, it was pretty much all up to me, as my Mom hated to cook, and my brother hates it even more.
After Mom died, my brother and I declared ourselves "free agents," on all holidays. We live about 2 hours from each other, and it was a relief to both of us.
I have had dinner with friends, but I prefer going my own way, and making something I really like. I don't know what it will be, this year.

I miss Thanksgiving in New Jersey. Family, good friends, excellent weather, dark turkey and more dark turkey. And in Squim, Washington with my ex and son and family.

Growing up Thanksgiving was huge. We'd have a full on Italian meal followed by turkey and all the trimmings followed by a marathon of desserts. My wife and kids and I are the only ones left here in Jersey so we keep it just us and I cook up whatever looks good at the butcher. Sometimes steaks, sometimes a roast. Who knows?
Though 2 weeks before Thanksgiving we do a Friendsgiving at my house. I deep fry a bird and everybody brings some dishes and some booze and we have a great time. This year will mark year 17!

The Friendsgiving is the key. My friends and I have been doing it for a similarly long time (started in '05). I actually prefer to real Thanksgiving; it's for all of us to get together and enjoy each other's families and each other's company, something we get to do less and less of as the years drag on. My buddy deep fried a bird one year and it was incredible. My friend who does the hosting does something a little different every year, usually involving smoking or some sort of day-long process. It's one of a handful of times a year I eat meat and it's always a treat when he does it. Ahhh yes, good times.

My kids are 12 & 9 and their sports/activities have us running around all the time. This is especially true considering I coach my son's football & baseball teams. This makes it hard to get together with friends as they are running around with their kid's activities too. Just makes me appreciate things like Friendsgiving even more!

Hopefully I'll find some good sales on turkey and other Thanksgiving dinner items after the holiday is over. A plate of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, and gravy - lots of gravy - is a meal I could eat anytime. Absolutely love a good turkey dinner.

Stuffed cabbage rolls if Publix gets more in or Chinese. I'm also going to try my hand at a boxed cake mix, Betty Crocker butter chocolate with Betty Crocker buttercream frosting. I'm not a baker so this is a big step for me. I did make an apple cake from scratch for Halloween, WKD ate almost the whole thing (I had 2 pieces) in 36 hours then complained he gained 3 lbs. It did taste good. It was the second time I baked an apple cake.

Most of the food from Publix is very good.

We haven't done family dinners for years now. My mom would cook/bake for days getting ready for Thanksgiving and all of the family came, usually 15 people. When I got married, my mother in law expected us there for Thanksgiving too. NO to taking turns every other year. She was adamant about us being there. We were very young and didn't stand up to her. SO, we would have dinner around 1pm at my folks and then hightail it to in laws around 4-5pm (because Grandpa didn't ever eat a big meal at lunchtime) for another big meal. I hated it because we never had room for Mom's pies because we were going to another full meal! Luckily, she would save us a piece of our favorites for the next day! Years went by before we finally put our foot down and stopped doing two meals. We could never really enjoy either meal or the company because we were always rushing! This year mr sunshine and I ordered meals from a local restaurant. We will have turkey, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, cranberry sauce and an individual loaf of wheat bread. They will be picked up the day before and reheated on Thanksgiving. We did this same dinner several years ago and it was very good. Not the same an Mom's, but we don't need a whole turkey, even a small one and mr sunshine wants dark meat. This meal comes with both white and dark, so we switch and he gets my dark meat and I get his white.

The Ham is in the house! Any sides suggestions? Cheesy scalloped potatoes or baked sweet potatoes, scalloped corn, roasted brussel sprouts and we always had black and green olives at Thanksgiving!
