Here's one that even the whiny brats won't argue against (or maybe I underestimate their whininess):
Hitchcock: 1935 directed one of his worst movies in THE 39 STEPS Followed in 1936 by what is obviously his greatest film SECRET AGENT.
Certainly, he had many great films, but anyone who ever saw SECRET AGENT and is honest about it, will put it in the top 10 Hitchcock films ever made. Well, everyone but the whiny brat dorks. No offense.
Here are more that even the whiners probably won't argue against:
de Mille a few times:
THE BUCCANEER 1938, pretty much a waste of budget, though not real bad, but "bad" in comparison to its budget Followed in 1939 by a classic Western, arguably the greatest Western ever, UNION PACIFIC
Also, THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH, 1952, not that "bad", but a bad 'greatest show". Followed in 1956 by a classic THE TEN COMMANDMENTS
I'll have to view the 1926 THE VOLGA BOATMAN, which came just before what might be the greatest film ever made THE KING OF KINGS in 1927
Should be easy for the sporadic Spielberg, except his movies mostly went into decline, getting worse and worse. There is one instance of him going from a bad to what is probably a great movie, however. 1979-1941 was pretty bad. Lets just say any humor was "forced", and you had to pretend it was funny. 1981-RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK was pretty great.
Arguably twice for Lean. From Brief Encounter to Great Expectations, a pretty bad movie to a pretty great one, and from Summertime (pretty bad) to a great one in Kwai.
John Ford a few times. Certainly from a dull plodding THE FUGITIVE 1947 to the Western classic FORT APACHE 1948
and 1955 also saw a dull plodding THE LONG GRAY LINE, which may have been made dull on purpose to the classic MISTER ROBERTS
