Ken Rosenthal wrote a good article in the Athletic about the game last and the impending death of starting pitching. Mostly that baseball needs to fix this because no fans like bullpen games and openers. Baseball made big changes when pitching grew too dominant in he late 60's. Lowering the mound, fixing the strike zone and the DH. One idea is to limit spots on a roster for pitchers, 13 one year, then down to 12 then 11 if the issue isn't resolved. This was supposed to happen in 2020 but got scrubbed because of COVID. And it wouldn't work on its own. A team could just have three "everyday" pitchers, one for innings 1-3, one for innings 4-6 and one for the last three. None of that "3rd time through the order" that terrifies teams more than WWIII. but then couple that with the "double hook". when you pull your pitcher, you lose the DH. No team, especially AL teams, are going to want pitchers hitting for the last 2/3 of a game. Will the players sign on for this,, limiting roster spots in a year when the CBA expires

If the Os get a quality starter I see them as the favs in the AL East—though this could be due to the fact I’m on a large amount of painkillers at the moment.

Nope. They’ve hired Bob Melvin. There a hire to excite the fans.
Was Jim Riggleman and Jim Fregosi busy? Mike Sciocia turned it down.

Can't believe he's not also a pitcher.

Been reading a lot of sources saying that it's Fire Sale time in Oakland. Matt Chapman, Mark Canha, Matt Olson, Sean Manaea, et al,all sitting in the front window with a sign that says "EVERYTHING MUST GO!!".

But Brad Pitt gets to stay as owner/GM/whatever the shit he is/was? It could be a maneuver to get a new stadium. Beane was in the Vegas area this week. Cue ominous music. I'm torn on BB. Part of me thinks "This can't satisfy any Athletics fan". But, with that shitty situation, a god awful stadium and eternally playing the ugly stepsister to the Giants, the A's should be worse than Pittsburgh or Kansas City yet they have had a lot more success. Ask Pirates fans it they would take a quick out in the playoffs more than 5th place finishes in a shit division. They made a ghastly decision trading Jesus Luzardo, a live arm despite his bloated stats, for a two month rental on Starling Marte. The farm is weak as hell, Chapman, Canha and Olson aren't going to take them to the WS so it might be better to tear down and rebuild. But, that's a division a weaker team could compete. Texas has bottomed out, the Angels can't lure pitching, Seattle is in limbo and Houston could be disintegrating.

Ray is likely priority. Semien, I think, that they think, that they would have a better playoff chance using that money on a left handed batter instead. Matz might be priced out by a bad team somewhere.

Which version will you get, the 2017 or 2021 Robbie Ray or the 2015 or 2020 Ray? Will he get a Trevor Bauer deal, which I have to think leaves the Jays out.The Yankees are drooling over Semien which complicates things. Will they overpay just to keep him away from the Bronx?

I think Atkins will spend anything for getable pitching, just like he did Ryu. I also think this team is only entering its prime window in 2022, & that's gotta be a selling point for Ray to re-sign. Semien isn't required for this lineup. Even with team record homers, the 12 run garbage time routs proved not enough during spring & August lulls. Lineup needs balance & that can be had.

Could he Jays have enough pitching without Ray. Ryu, Jose Berrios, Alex Manoah, Steve Matz (easy sign if Ray walks), that's a decent four man rotation. Then one of the less expensive FA starters. Alex Manoah is going to be a monster.

I'm nervous what happens with Freddie Freeman. The Braves can afford him but some team could easily offer him stupid money like Pujols got with the Angels. If the Braves win tge WS I think FF stays. As of right now, they have about $70m in space before bumping up against the threshold and their core guys, Acuna and Albies, are already locked up on team friendly deals. Max Fried, Mike Soroka (if he can come back), Luke Jackson, Austin Riley and Dansby Swanson are still in their arbitration years. I can certainly understand the nervousness and you never know, but my gut tells me Freeman will stay with the Braves for the rest of his career, especially after this WS run. Dansby dropped the mic at the parade "resign Freddie" which got a huge ovation. I can't see the Braves letting him go. He is a legacy player and after a Ship? Hard to sell the fans on letting him leave.

Rumor is Braves unload Ozuna contract (apparently teammates don't want him back) and bring back Jorge Soler to DH. Duvall is likely too pricey.
