Looking at this year's numbers so far, it doesn't look like movie theaters are doing as well as some hoped back in January when the vaccine was rolled out. Theaters will always have many who want to come to them. But if not enough come, then it becomes un-economical for studios to go that route rather than release via stream where the studio gets a larger cut. IOW- if a critical mass of patrons doesn't show up, it blows up the business model.
Will theaters survive?
Will they only carry art house/ independent stuff while big pix are released stream?

The future is in streaming because a monthy subscription is never ending money as long as you make the subscription worthwhile to the subscriber.

Too many people just want to watch from home. They don't realize that It's not sustainable, and if things keep on this way, the days of Avengers: Endgame-level movies are over.

Yes. This is the 2nd time this has been asked. Theaters will survive. Theaters will probably come roaring back once Batman comes out.

I think that they could stay around for a few more decades. It depends on whether they adjust to the times by letting people rent out theaters and watch what they want. Eventually I think that movies may evolve to the point whether it's interactivity or some other trick to the point where conventional theaters will be obsolete but how soon that would happen, who knows?

Survive? Sure. Even if the thriving megaplex era of the 90's is over, the industry should still be okay.

I fervently hope so - for another thirty years at least. After that, I donβt care.

Figure about 10% will survive, if that many, by 2030.
TV screens getting bigger and easier to manage. Pretty soon, the only attraction of theaters will be the nostalgic feeling, and drive ins have a more nostalgic air about them, so figure there will be even fewer theaters than drive ins.
I mean, really, if you were born say in 1990, 2000, or 2010, and in 2025 you had a choice of where to see a movie, wouldn't you think it would be more fun to go to a drive in than a theater? You'd want the nostalgia of the concession stand popcorn, unless you were a dweeb, and you could get a much more atmospheric walk in a drive in. Theaters just lack that aesthetic quality.
And drive ins really went down the tubes about 50 years ago. They'll come back in power, because they'll be somewhat more customer oriented, with some weather protective domes in the future, along with other climate control devices. They'll be fit for the future. Theaters are doomed to be totally defunct, with only the geekiest feeling the Nostalgia for them by 2040.

Drive in theaters are for weird dork Americans. In indoor cinemas you're protected from any rainfall, snow and rain noise that might obscure your view plus car window wipers constantly saying hello to you if there's heavy rain.

I think movie theaters will survive but the way people view them and use them will change. I think eventually movie theaters will become like live action theaters. Bic cities like New York, Chicago, etc. will have many. However other states like say Nebraska will only have some spread out throughout the state. Going to them will be like going to a play or musical.

One of the problems facing theaters if the fear of a repeat wave of infections. People do not want to put their money into a business that could collapse at the first sign of a new pandemic. And new pandemics will be coming as so many Americans are old, obese and have multiple medical conditions even a minor virus can wreck havoc.
In short, Americans are becoming very fragile.

Of course but they won't be the first choice for ALL theatrical releases. There are films that most would prefer to watch on the imax screen over their laptop/tv. Avatar, Dune, Guardians of Galaxy, Avengers, Star Wars (final trilogy) are a few such films that boast extraordinary special effects and surround sound features that deserves to be seen in a theater only!

The Cell Phone, not COVID, killed the theater for me. The constant glow of the cell phones of nimrods that couldn't go 13 seconds to see whose Tweeting who was the end. I used to think coughing, crunching popcorn and those who can't pay attention "leading to the "who's that? what's he doing" whisper. I would have gone to see Dune in a theater five years ago. never considered it.
Plus, I can never get the theater to pause the movie when I have to pee. Meanies
