Wouldn't "average" win by definition?

I have seen about 8,000 movies.
I would say the ones that take up the most are mediocre/average. About 3,000 of those 8,000 I consider good movies and about 1,000 as flat-out bad.

Wouldn't "average" win by definition? By average he just means it's an okay movie, nothing special. Not good, but not flat-out bad either. There could be someone who thinks most movies they watch are great, great would then be the average movie. That isn't how the OP is using the term.

I think the answer is most are formulatic. Which causes problems with pacing and character development. Not to mention how hard it is to write a good script. Most movies are probably just okay.

Lune is correct, of course, in a normal world, but when you have so many horrible writers in the mob, each of them taught at birth to praise the function of the mob, and each getting preference in being produced, you have a very lopsided bottom rung.
I've been in about ten writer groups in the past, people who probably went nowhere, and whose stories and scripts seemed mediocre at best to me, and yet each and every one of them were better writers than whomever wrote over half of the screenplays, stories, etc. of the movies, TV, and books I've seen and read from the past 50 years at least, and it wasn't much better 60 years ago.
Stage plays are the exception. The small time stage play from some unknown "real artist" is about always the best bet. I haven't seen one in a while, and I'm not biased, because I watch plays written by people I never met.
The answer to the OP question is "most movies are rotten, lousy, stinking, depressing movies". "Awful" is the best description on that list. That is the correct answer.

Its time people like you need to learn that subjective opinions are not factual opinions.

Most are bad. Which makes the ones that are really good that more awesome.

I would be surprised if folks here thought movies were overall good. Posters at this site probably have higher standards than most.
Movies are a business first and an art second. Movies costs more to make than any other art form. Those who invest in a film want profits and the the most reliable way to get that is by using a formula that is proven- no matter how worn out it is. Average people want cheeseburgers not truffles.
Someday, the cost of making a movie will become so low (due to technology) that we will be able to make our own movies of any type and create really innovative ones. But the problem then will be that there are so many movies out that the public won't know which to choose and finding the good stuff will be hard (average people will produce a lot of junk too). This dynamic is already playing out in music.
