Haven't seen this one in close to a decade. Possibly the most terrifying airplane crash I've ever seen in a movie. Excellent sound design throughout, like the silence being broken during the plane crash or the deliberate lack of music when Chuck is on the Island. It isn't until Chuck looks back at the Island we get the requisite sad Alan Silvestri music. In a career filled with fine performances, Tom Hanks is downright fantastic here. The final scene with Wilson... it still gets me. As I mentioned in a previous thread about movies quitting while they're ahead, I still feel the same way. Once Chuck is rescued, the movie goes on for what feels like four years. I think just cutting to the credits when we see the ship next to his raft would have been suffice. Then again, I'm not Bob Zemeckis. The symbolism is laid on pretty thick when he finds himself at a literal crossroads in his life. Still, it's a pretty good movie.
3 out of 4

I remember us talking about it late last year for the 20th anniversary. Below is what I said about the movie: IMDB2.freeforums.net/thread/255060/20th-anniversary-cast-away-december"I've always felt Cast Away is a good film that just falls short of being a great one. The stuff before and the island scenes are fine, although I admit when I watch the movie I usually watch the island scenes since that is when the movie is at its best. Kudos for keeping the action the whole time on the island and not cutting away from it to Helen Hunt or the other characters. It's a testament to Hanks' acting to keep our attention with minimal dialogue, his interaction with Wilson (and the dramatic scene of him losing Wilson) and just him doing various tasks to survive. Director Robert Zemeckis does a good job with handling the memorable plane crash and also directing overall with a steady and subtle hand. I also enjoy the minimal-but-memorable Alan Silvestri score when it is appropriately used and kudos for not using it during the island scenes. One thing I really would have liked to have seen, which would have made the film more dramatically effective, is Hanks trying to readjust to life after being on an island in complete isolation struggling each day to survive after 4 years. We just go from him being rescued to a title card that tells us 4 weeks had passed and we see Hanks on a plane all normal again as if nothing happened. It would have been dramatically effective to see him recovering in the hospital, learning how to do things again, adjusting to eating regular food again, dealing with any psychological effects of being isolated for so long, getting used to human contact again, etc."

Little moments like him surveying the food on the table or easily getting fire from a lighter are simple yet effective.

7/10. It’s too bad we lost this Zemeckis for nearly a decade due to his mo-cap obsession.

The back-to-civilation scenes aren't as good as the island scenes, but probably were necessary to the plot and character. Perhaps it could have been done better, though. I do remember as a kid thinking the movie had gumption (hey-o) for depicting Helen Hunt as having moved on with her life and them not getting back together.

Enjoyed it a lot. Felt like the island scenes should have been a bit longer and the back-to-civilization scenes a bit shorter, but it's not a big deal. Tom Hanks and Robert Zemeckis are a perfect actor-director match when they do their stuff.

Tom Hanks on recent Bill Simmons podcast. Fun stories. He swam out to a boat every morning & back in at night, for ride out to 'set'... in Fiji they only used natural daylight. His beard might've been fake except the hours to waste & the water would've wrecked it on day 1. He cut his shin with a shell I think, got staph infection. It's not all fun & glory.
The initial premise was what would happen to a FedEx plane if it crashed in the middle of the Pacific. They didn't want pirates or locals in the story, just isolation.

9/10 also. A masterpiece of pure visual directing.
