Hello, good folks of FG. The weekly film discussion thread is back. The topic under discussion is made clear in the title. Made-for-TV, direct-to-video, streaming, TV series/episodes, documentaries, short films can also be listed. The minimum requirement is that a numerical rating out of 5 or 10 be provided - whichever the poster wishes to choose - and it'll be even more helpful if he/she also writes a few thoughts regarding his/her experience with the feature/documentary/short/TV series' season. This will help in starting discussions, which is one of the main intentions of this thread. I also request all those who reply here to go through the whole thread once and see if you can see some common topic to discuss with other posters.
My last week wasn't very good.
**********************************************************************************************************
God-awful. People say that this was a minor comeback for Cimino after Heaven's Gate. Now I haven't seen that film but it's hard for me to imagine it being worse than this. Each and every conceivable cliche of all the flicks where one rogue cop goes against a mafia network is thrown into this. Add to that, the racism of the main character is off the charts and the film has the gall to present it as fair. The plot is moronic, the editing is a multilevel failure and the acting is terrible with the sole exception of John Lone. The climax is filmed so poorly it reminded me of Samurai Cop.
2/10
**********************************************************************************************************
The concept is okay but the film hardly does anything with it. It tries to tackle with some heavy themes such as loss of innocence, awareness of death and playing with the real lives of real people. But the acting of the two children is poor and it is not entertaining. I suppose you can show it to your children but there are other better options such as Honey, I Shrunk the Kids and The Borrowers. I especially recommend the latter.
Quite an ordinary heist movie that doesn't do anything out of the box and anything that you cannot see coming from 5 miles away. I cannot fault the acting of the three principles De Niro, Norton and Brando but they have done a lot better work elsewhere, even in genre films. The heist sequence is exciting but the buildup to it is just passing time by dragging.
A silly rom-com with broad caricatures. Genuine laughs are few and far between. Sarah Jessica Parker looks gorgeous, though. Now I want to watch Indecent Proposal more than before because both the films share the general story, only the treatment is different.
Its notoriety as "one of the worst movies ever made" - - had geared me up to expect something a lot worse. However, I read the source novel by Carl Hiaasen right before and liked it, so I knew it was not going to be that bad. It ended up being a mediocre, forgettable comedy that had its moments and stretches but did not come together as well as the novel managed. I think that a lot of the backlash had to do with the infamous provocative poster as well as the trailers which emphasized the sleaze over the elements of comedy, the complicated plot and the back-and-forth between the ensemble cast.
I had planned to watch Russ Meyer's most widely known film as my first among his works. But ended up watching Vixen! as the first. Seeing how much I enjoyed it I should have expected FPKK to be a downer in comparison. I can understand its value for film historians and analysts. But I did not find it to be as consistently entertaining as Vixen! Part of the problem is that there isn't much of a story and hence the pace often slackens. Another part is that there is almost no nudity, which is a big departure for Meyer from his usual norm. I feel no shame in admitting that I would have loved to see all these gorgeous, attractive women frolicking naked but the script was never interested in that.

Year of the Dragon (1985, Michael Cimino) - I didn't think it was that bad, but I found it largely unengaging and surprisingly dull. Rourke was obviuosly miscast being far too young for the role. It's a generic cop thriller nothing more. 5.5/10 The Score (2001, Frank Oz) - I agree that this is rather by-the-numbers. However I enjoyed Norton's character and found him to be the only memorable thing about the movie. 5/10

Have you watched The Borrowers? If you haven't, I know you will surely like it.
Haven't seen either of The Addams Family films. I remember the trailers on HBO, even back then I knew a Burton-esque looking film when I saw one. I also recall one of the many cartoon series airing on Cartoon Network.

I watched Skyfall in early 2014; when I did my first ever JB marathon. I liked it enough to rate it 7/10 but it was a step down from Casino Royale. Haven't seen the later two entries yet. The idea of repeating the marathon has been knocking about inside my head for a few months now. Don't know if I will get that much time.
I have watched Snake Eyes but the only part I remember is the ersatz long take in the beginning.

Nick Nolte was the original choice and maybe he would have been better but the film would still have suffered due to the appalling script.
I just don't see what's so great about Rourke or Sean Penn. Maybe I have seen them only in wrong films and roles.

This was your first viewing, eh? What do you think its major failings were and its high points, if you could find any?
I have seen The Mummy's Tomb but still I had to google it to recall. The sequels to the original Mummy are quite interchangeable and forgettable. I remember one of them starred a clean-shaven John Carradine as the high priest. There is another (or was it the same one? Dunno...) where a buried woman arises from a swamp. I recall that being quite a striking scene and the only noteworthy thing about that film.
Couple of the other titles - The Last Man on Earth and The Tamarind Seed - are in my watchlist.

No I haven't watched The Borrowers but if you think I will like it, is it any good? Compared to TIitC, absolutely. It does a lot more with the concept. A couple of instances of scatological humour could have been left out but that's all it has going against it. It is surprising to me that it is not more well known.
