I've been waiting to go here for years, and will be hiking around the valley and up to the massive and famous granite walls, all day. The entire day. It's all I'm going to do, and it's going to be epic.
If you've never been, it is truly one of the most beautiful places on Earth. Make the effort to go.

Zion National Park should be your next stop.

Zion National Park should be your next stop. Interestingly similar deep valley and massive wall view. I'll definitely try to get there, thanks for the tip. I love the contrast of the flat but cracked granite walls, to the red pitted clay of Zion.

I just got back. Spent 2 nights out there and 12 hours hiking on Saturday. WOW.
Hiked all the way up to Half Dome which is quite a trip into the woods and then halfway up the mountain. Then the same thing for Sentinel at the end of the day. That one nearly killed me. Both are the south side of the Valley but at opposite ends, with great views all the way down.
In the middle of the day I trekked off the road a bit to El Capitan, which is much easier to get to the base of, and there were a handful of climbers on different routes. I found a large flat boulder and laid on it watching them under some shade. It was fantastic. A lady nearby passed around some binoculars to watch them.
The weather was perfect. Oh I saw quite a few deer who will stand within easy eye site, just 50 feet away, and I also ran up on a rattlesnake. The thing was 5 feet from me and I'm not sure I would have noticed if it hadn't have rattled. It kept it's eye on me and wandered off. I told everybody hiking back down Sentinel to keep an eye out for it.

If you had been bitten, who would have volunteered to suck out the poison?

Stanforth was nearly killed by a snake and yet had the presence of mind to warn other hikers to be aware of the potential danger. The guy is a bloody hero!!
