One of the main reasons I dont love The Dark Knight as much as everyone else is the incredibly distracting re-cast of the Rachel Dawes character. Maggie Gyllenhaal is probably a better actor than Katie Holmes but whenever I watch TDK she always looks, talks and behaves like shes Bruce Waynes mother, not his love interest. Whilst Katie isnt the best actress, she was far more suited to the role. She looked younger, more attractive and less whiny.
Who would you have preferred if both had equal chance at the role.

Katie Holmes shouldn't have even been in Batman Begins. Rachel Dawes is an assistant DA, not an Instagram influencer, so if she acts mature and isn't the most fuckable chick in Gotham it's understandable. Anytime Katie is running around the courts in BB talking about plea bargains and corruption it looks like some brat taking Bring Your Child To Work Day too seriously.
Generally I find recasting distracting as well, but can you imagine the absolute shitshow of a performance Katie would deliver tied to that oil drum? We go from Ledger's tour de force in the interrogation room to Katie Holmes yawning through her final moments on earth with bemused dissatisfaction. It'd be awful.

She's definitely a better actress than Katie Holmes, and I like Katie Holmes. It's always dicey though when a recast happens. It would actually be my preference that Gylenhaal was there from the beginning.
I was really surprised Holmes didn't come back for the sequel.

Gyllenhaal is the better actress and fits the role of Assistant DA better than Holmes, who frankly looks a bit too young and 'innocent' for the role.

It continues to surprise me that Maggie is Jake's sister he's so much prettier than she is. Jake looks attractive while she looks like a sophisticated Chucky doll. |

Actually I've rewatched that scene just now on YouTube it was actually better than I remembered it was. I let her looks influence my opinion of her acting. It was maybe buffbrad's inclusion of Heath's acting leading into what would've been a Katie Holmes performance that I assumed was an Oscar pitch. |
