Seriously? It’s easily one of their best. How did it get rated worse than Ant Man and the Wasp or Incredible Hulk? Critics are morons.

I haven't watched the Eternals (going to see it this Friday) but I'm going to hazard a guess here. It's the same problem that the DCEU movies had before.
When you advertise your restaurant as fine dining, people will expect it to be fine dining and will judge it accordingly. When you advertise your restaurant as a fast-food joint, people will judge it as a fast-food joint.
The mistake the DCEU made with their first few movies was that they kept trying to make it seem like it was high art. Like the movies were a lot deeper than the comicbook superhero movies that they were. Thus, audiences and critics judged it more harshly when it failed to deliver high art.
The MCU movies on the other hand advertised nothing but a heartfelt, enjoyable superhero movie, and they were able to deliver on that front. People expected a light, fun movie and that's exactly what they got.
The trailers for the Eternals don't advertise that. They make it seem like the movie is supposed to be much deeper and more serious than your standard superhero movie, so my guess is that critics also used a more unforgiving metric to measure it.

Possibly. But I find that to be unfair. And I do think this movie lived up to what it promised, for the most part. Unlike the DCEU movies it actually does genuinely have some intelligence. But yeah, people probably expected either high art and were let down, or expected typical MCU fare and were let down.

My understanding from reading a few reviews is it’s boring and the filmmakers forgot it’s not what the characters are, but who they are. Pandering even for a positive or noble cause is still pandering.

It's not a bad movie but it's not the best either. That’s fair. I get that it’s not everyone’s cup of tea and though I liked it quite a bit my general point is that even with its flaws I don’t think warrants a “rotten” rating. Especially since no other MCU movies have been deemed rotten so far.

Pandering even for a positive or noble cause is still pandering. I didn’t find it pandering at all, personally. A few dull characters? Sure. Exposition heavy? Absolutely. But the diversity of the cast was not pandering at all and it was never even the focus. In fact, it just made sense that a team of humanoids created specifically to protect all the humans on Earth would be designed to reflect the diversity of said humans.
