Or does he have one? Sometimes I think he's one of those actors that doesn't have to try, not that he plays the same character all the time but it just seems effortless.
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate, even need, easygoing movies like his. I like him, but it's like he's not even trying. lol
Do you agree, if not what movie do you think is his best?

Four Weddings and a Funeral for me.
Although it sounds like you may be talking about best performance, as opposed to best film. Not sure which one you meant.

I think the OP means that he doesn't pick more interesting movies and mostly stays within a certain genre. That isn't so much true anymore though. He has played an interesting variety of characters in the last 5 years or so.

He use to play in stuff that just isn't my type of movie, but he has recently done more interesting movies and gone outside his typical romantic comedy stuff. He has done some stuff besides that in the past (Extreme Measures, for example), but not very often.
Best movie - Cloud Atlas
Best movie as lead - About a Boy
Best performance - Florence Foster Jenkins

Movies like that and Notting Hill just seem effortless but to be honest I haven't seen his more recent films.

He's a good actor, but he coasted on his rom-com appeal until it was almost too late. His best work has been on TV lately.

My favorite movie of his is probably Bitter Moon.
For performance, as moviemouth said in the last few years he seem to be branching out more. I think my two favorite performances of his are The Gentlemen and Paddington 2. He was a lot of fun in both of those and quite different from his romantic comedy roles that he's known for.

About a Boy is his best performance. Best movie as a lead/co-lead: Maurice. Best movie overall: Sense & Sensibility.

My favorite Hugh Grant performance is probably Florence Foster Jenkins as well. Though my favorite movie featuring him so far is The Gentlemen.

I don't think about Grant much, but this thread made me consider his career, and I have to say it's impressive. He started off showing a flair for comedic parts, but he was also effective in An English Scandal (of course, there were comedic elements to that) and The Undoing. He played a quietly sinister part in the latter very well.

He's a good actor (also agree) why not go for it with the best you've got? but then again those movies have a lot of value, at least for me. It's often what I need, something light, kind and charming, to help with the stuff that isn't.
