So I just watched Pig. I heard a lot of good things about this film. 4 out of 4 Stars on Ebert.com. 6.9 on IMDB plus lots of other positive reviews. I felt disappointed by it. I dont think its a bad film I was just hoping for more.
The film is about a truffle hunter who lives out in wilderness with his pig. His pig is kidnapped and Cage goes out to find her using past acquaintances. There is one thing I did understand. Cage shows up to like some kind of underground fight club type where he gets punched a lot. I didnt understand what that was all about. The one big positive is Nicolas Cages performance. He plays a broken man who only cares about his pig. He plays it very well. But the film as a whole I was really disappointed with. It felt like not much really happens in it. If I wanted a film going on a journey after what he loves I rather watch Pee Wees Big Adventure. But at least its better than some other of Cage's films to come out in the last decade like Left Behind, Running with the Devil, Between Worlds and The Runner.
4/10 What did you all think of Pig?

"I remember every meal I ever cooked and every person I ever cooked for"
I am a huge fan of Nicolas Cage, he is one of the most entertaining and creative actors in the business imo. He fell on rough times after 2006 and has made many MANY bad movies. I have seen most of them. I sit around twiddling my thumbs, waiting for his diamonds in the rough. It happend with Joe. It happened with Mandy. Now it has happened with what is one of the best movies of his career.
Pig is a quiet, calm and deeply affecting movie about the importance of human connection. It is almost a Buddhist version of John Wick. It is about a grizzled former renowned chef named Robin Felt (Nicolas Cage) who moved into a small house in the woods after his wife died. His only emotional connection is with his pet truffle pig. Robin is beaten one night and his pig taken. From there he goes on a journey back to the big city to find his pig with the help of a man he sells truffles to, played well by Alex Wolff. He seeks out former acquaintances along the way and has interesting little encounters with these people and others. The movie is well-shot and well-made and Nicolas Cage gives one of the most subtle and moving performances of his career. Many people will probably find this movie boring and it is slow-moving, but it is a very good movie imo.
8/10

Not sure being told by someone that you convincingly play a man who only cares about his pig very well is as complimentary as you think it is.

The whole thing with the underground fighting club is most likely meant to be a subversion of expectations. Based on the premise, many people would expect the movie to be a John Wick knockoff, and that particular subplot leans into the idea that we’re going to see Nic Cage demonstrate that he’s playing a “badass” action hero, only for that to not be the case.
