DEADLINE: Your main gripe about superhero movies? SCOTT: Their scripts are not any fucking good. I think I’ve done three great scripted superhero movies. One would be Alien with Sigourney Weaver. One would be fucking Gladiator, and one would be Harrison Ford… DEADLINE: Blade Runner… SCOTT: They’re superhero movies. So, why don’t the superhero movies have better stories? Sorry. I got off the rail, but I mean, c’mon. They’re mostly saved by special effects, and that’s becoming boring for everyone who works with special effects, if you’ve got the money. deadline.com/2021/11/ridley-scott-house-of-gucci-lady-gaga-adam-driver-the-last-duel-oscar-season-1234872529/

Ridley Scott who invented corporations seeking to capture deadly aliens for human wars when nukes are more than enough, the guy who had a character pet an alien snake like it was a puppy in Prometheus, the same Ridley Scott who had a robot all of a sudden create the Xenomorphs is talking about better stories?

It’s a conversation….he’s not saying those movies are superhero movies, he’s going on a rant and coming back to an earlier sentiment. Still…I don’t understand why certain people in the film industry feel so defensive about superhero movies. It’s not overly difficult to see why they’re popular. They’re easy to watch, well polished and family friendly without feeling overly childish. The antagonistic pushback from these Hollywood old heads just makes me less interested in stuff like The Last Duel or whatever boring slog of a film Scott has out these days.

It's just a variant of the pushback against blockbusters in general. Some of the old guard is still mad the New Hollywood era collapsed on itself.

Huh. Ya know, this time I really thought the arthouse/old school director's take-on-superhero-movies-of-the-week would be positive. Fooled once again!

It seems like he's taking aim at the superhero films that get the mainstream exposure/treatment. I wonder if he considers small films like Fast Color in the superhero films with shit scripts department. My guess is he's probably thinking of the MCU, or the DC movies between Man of Steel and the first Justice League. Does anyone reckon he's talking about Batman Returns?
At this point, the catalogue is getting too large for "superhero movies" to be one swoop. It's a genre now.

I guess by "superhero" he's talking about comic books in general, and those movies do FEEL like they could have easily been based on comic books. Gladiator actually reminds me of 300, which was based on a comic book. Alien actually inspired a comic book series. There have tons of comic books that use the same tech-noir/dystopian setting of Blade Runner

I don't think he's wrong.
MCU exploded because so many familiar faces finally came together. Would standalone all those heroes made billions? I doubt it. The Eternals is riding the MCU wave, not their characters branding.
Anyways, well written stuff like X-Men, TDK, Watchmen... is fine for the genre.

All the IronMan trilogy made over a billion, Doctor Strange, Captain America 2 and 3 and Thor Ragnarok including MCU Spiderman 2 all made a billion. You don't think Ridley is wrong but it turns out you're wrong aboiya few things.

I think he has a different interpretation of what a "superhero" is compared to the rest of us. His idea of a superhero is a regular person who is flawed, has no superpowers, etc. but they somehow end up saving the day, stop the villain, etc. It's like when someone says a real superhero is someone like a soldier, police officer, firefighter, etc. Of course him picking on superhero films in general is asking for trouble, as well as criticism for his own work, even though he's entitled to his opinion.
Some of these movies do have the flaws he's talking about, but it's unfair to say all superhero movies are the way he says they are. Some do have good scripts, stories, and aren't all about visual effects.
