"The Godfather" is highly revered, but at the time it must been a huge risk for studios. Keep in mind:
Marlon Brando was a washed up has been Al Pacino was a relative nobody (Coppolla had to fight the studio to get him cast) Coppolla was mostly known for directing skin flicks prior to Godfather

Epics like Titanic and Lord of the Rings were huge gambles.

If we're being honest, the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Pirate movies weren't fashionable when it came out.

Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. A sequel to an overblown blockbuster that no one really liked, made on a much lower budget and directed by a guy who had literally never seen an episode of Star Trek in his life.

That no one really liked? A movie doesn't become a blockbuster if no one never liked it.

That no one really liked? A movie doesn't become a blockbuster if no one never liked it. I was speaking more in a figurative sense than a literal one. It did well at the box office sure, and it has its fans to this day, but it was generally considered a big disappointment.

Sonic The Hedgehog. Just everything about this should have made the movie tank, but miraculously it didn’t.

What about the 4 other movies he directed during the 10 years in between his last skin flick and The Godfather?
