I want to make an on-going thread of best movies (or favorite) from 1939 onwards. I'm starting with this year because it was a big year for hollywood. I'm not very familiar with earlier films, if you want to do a thread of earlier years by all means.
Wizard of Oz Gone with the Wind The Hunchback of Notre Dame
Three of the most memorable movies of all time, but I must admit The Hunchback of Notre Dame is a really dark movie! best, but not favorite.
Yours from 1939?

Hm, OK… (Chronological order based on Wikipedia’s list, then anything that isn’t on Wiki’s list and comes to mind.)
Son of Frankenstein Stagecoach The Hound of the Baskervilles Love Affair Only Angels Have Wings The Man in the Iron Mask The Wizard of Oz The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes Charlie Chan at Treasure Island Mr. Smith Goes to Washington The Flying Deuces Another Thin Man Gone with the Wind The Hunchback of Notre Dame Q Planes
Still have yet to see La règle du jeu, Beau Geste, Destry Rides Again, The Four Feathers, The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex, Union Pacific, Young Mr. Lincoln, Wuthering Heights, Midnight…
Ninotchka is probably the most conspicuous absence from my list, but as much as I love Lubitsch I’ve never warmed up to it, alas.

I'm more and more amazed by this year with every post! Thanks Salzmank I am not an aficionado on classic film, just thought it was a good idea for an on-going thread. I'm looking forward to people who are regarding the 40s and 50s. I'm not really a Ninotchka fan either. Thanks again Salzmank!

Bette Davis and Flynn are so great. Thank you. I made one change and added The Real Glory in place of Stanley and Livingstone. It's not a bad film but The Real Glory is a pretty enjoyable action flick with Gary Cooper playing one of his cowboy heroes like he's in a western even though it's set in turn-of-the-century Philippines.

I liked The Hunchback of Notre Dame as well, but remember nothing of it sadly, another film for my way to large rewatch pile.

Regards Wizard of Oz; Considering color just came about using black and white also in one film was so innovative. Not to mention the acting was amazing, Judy Garland of course, but Margaret Hamilton still gives me chills as the witch!
