I hope you'll understand when I say that the idea that physical virginity is regarded by God as a valued gift for him strikes me as awfully primitive.

That is why I refuse to share and discuss the traditions of the Roman Catholic Church with these ignorant haters!

It is perhaps older than the human species itself. That doesn't make it bad...just part of our genetic makeup.

People have the right to have sex and the right to not have sex. How people arrive at their decision might irk some people but in the end her choice is not really affecting the rest of us (unless one of us really needs to have sex with her).

I hope you'll understand when I say that the idea that physical virginity is regarded by God as a valued gift for him strikes me as awfully primitive. No where in the Bible is virginity valued beyond a righteous Jewish female must remain so until marriage. In the case of the BVM, it was important in the narrative she be a virgin in order to accept God into her womb. It’s never been resolved within Christianity if Mary remained a virgin after Jesus was born. But the Gospels clearly speak of Jesus’ brothers and sisters, so I don’t think the early Jewish Christians valued it either. I think the mystic of virginity is a pagan interjection into later state Christianity. Anyway, Consecrated Virgins are like anchors, such as Julian of Norwich, to a particular church or diocese and serve as an inspiration to parishioners. As such they are obligated to practice certain rites, much like monks or nuns, and obey directives from their bishop. At least if she changes her mind in future, and most of them do, she can walk away easier. Or she can go deeper and join a religious order. what is your stance on the claim that virgin as translated in the bible in reference to Mary is actually mistranslated? www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/dec/24/story-virgin-birth-christianity-mary-sex-femininity

Thank you. The cynicism on this thread about vestal virgins strikes me as modern humans claiming to have developed some superiority over all the other human beings who have ever existed. No, we are no more physically evolved than those who lived 5000 years ago.
Sacred virginity has been a feature of many religions. And conversely, so has temple prostitution. But to ridicule this as something somehow inferior because it is "primitive" ignores the whole of human nature and our relationship to the universe. There is something about this vow of celibacy which crops up allover the world in almost every religion on earth. Sorry, but it's rather quaint of us moderns to cavalierly dismiss this because it conflicts with our revered and holy 1960's sexual revolution.
And trust me, I say this as one of the most promiscuous males on the planet. Lol. I prefer temple whores myself, though the Judeo-Christians did away with them when they murdered Baal. But I'm not so presumptuous to believe that those who practice religious celibacy are some strange primitive creatures who have no right to use their sexuality as they see fit.
You're under the illusion that you are arguing with me, but nothing you say contradicts my observation that the idea that physical virginity is regarded by God as a valued gift for him is primitive. Looking at your points:But our ideas are more evolved, and it's an idea I'm talking about.I expect that's true. The fact that an idea was commonplace "in almost every religion on earth" doesn't argue against its primitiveness. If anything, it would argue in favor of it.Who has suggested they have no right? I haven't. And I haven't suggested they are in any way "strange primitive creatures". What I see is a normal person needlessly inculcated with a wastefully primitive idea.

And I hope you will understand that not everybody shares your POV. Well then, maybe you can explain the rationality in telling someone: "God will be pleased if you forsake selfish pursuits (money, fame, pleasures) to do His will. But He will be even more pleased if, when doing his will, you also forsake the blessing of marriage, not a selfish pursuit, but something that He created for humans. Turn your back on that as well."

Because when the person chooses to forsake the blessing of marriage for the Sake Of Serving the Lord, he/she can better forsake the afore-mentioned selfish pursuits of money, fame, & pleasures.

If marriage is indeed a blessing from God, there is no basis to blame it for people neglecting God and pursuing selfish aims. Plenty of married Catholics, I'm sure, could testify to that.
