Though I could see how some might not have cared for Quinn Cummings' performance in The Goodbye Girl (1977), I LOVED it, and thought she was adorable (as well as INCREDIBLY great (performance-wise))......and especially loved the horse carriage scene where she ends up crying because she has such a crush on Richard Dreyfuss's character, who's fallen in love with her mother, played by Marsha Mason in the film..... Horse Carriage Scene ( 1:34:25 mark of the film) Anybody Else ?? SAVE FERRIS

Loved
Isla Johnston (about 13yo) who plays Anya Taylor-Joy as a child in The Queen’s Gambit Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense Abigail Breslin, 8-years old, was wonderful in “Keane” (2004).
Favorites from the classic era
Frankie Darro, Frankie Thomas, Freddie Barthoemew
Didn’t Like
It is tough for me to say this but most child actors from the classic era were pretty bad. One that sticks out in my memory was little Bobs Watson in “Boy’s Town” (1938) also with Frankie Thomas and Mickey Rooney. Rooney could sure sing and dance but I didn’t appreciate his acting until he was much older.

This is easy: hated all child actor performances.

That kid in Problem Child. Hated his performance, hated the movie. The kid in the original Blob movie that’s the brother of McQueens Girlfriend. I was hoping he would be a victim but it never happened.
The kid in Flight of the Navigator and the kid in Darryl. Both good performances. They were a bit older though.

Loved
Jackie Coogan in The Kid (1921)
Shirley Temple, for the most part when I was younger, not so much now, although I still recognize her talent is a work of genius.
Mary Ann Jackson, the impish tomboy with the Dutch-cut hair and freckles in the early sound shorts of the Our Gang Comedies.
Jackie "Butch" Jenkins, the dour tyke who makes Don Rickles look like Dick Van Dyke
Margaret O'Brien for her amazing depth of character in films like Meet Me in St. Louis and The Secret Garden
Dean Stockwell, also in The Secret Garden, certainly among the greatest child stars produced by Hollywood.
Tommy Rettig for his quiet, natural charm in The Five Thousand Fingers of Dr. T and his most famous role in tv's Lassie
Richie Andrusco, a one-time appearance in The Little Fugitive which he brings off without a hint of affectation
Jodie Foster, as close to genius as any kid on the screen, who was able to transcend her childhood career and become an adult power player in the industry
Patricia Gozzi, who made far too few films but exhibited a remarkable dramatic talent in Sundays and Cybele and Rapture
Special mention of the enigmatic Deborah Baxter in A High Wind in Jamaica and Carrie Henn in Aliens, both of whom appeared in only one movie
The hate list is short:
Aneta Corseaut's little brother in The Blob, someone's relative who was pressed into the movie and who is best left nameless
David Kory in Dondi, and if you are unfortunate enough to have seen the movie, no explanation is necessary
A quick defense of Dakota Fanning in The War of the Worlds; I didn't find her all that annoying, she did what a child would have done under that situation. However, I detested the son who gave Cruise nothing but snide attitude the entire time the father was trying to save his family from death. I wish Spielberg had had the guts to kill the bastard when he ran off to join the army.

There is only one child actor I really felt acted totally the way a child acts and not partly like a miniature adult- but probably nobody has seen the movie (which is great IMO): Bobby Henrey in The Fallen Idol (48)

Judith Vittet - City Of Lost Children Thomas Turgoose - This Is England Kate Hardie - Runners David Bradley - Kes Jodie Foster - Taxi Driver Dakota & Elle Fanning were consistently good(Especially Elle in Super 8). Ditto Hailee Steinfeld
The only one that I really didn't like that springs to mind is Jake Lloyd in Phantom Menace

I remember thinking that both Haley Joel Osment and Dakota Fanning we're going to rack up a bunch of Oscar wins when they hit older. Instead, Osment became a downright bad actor (in my opinion) while Fanning became a so-so actor.

Loved child Gamora played by Ariana Greenblatt. Probably the best MCU supporting casting. Added gravitas to play off Thanos. Hated Little Orphan Ani, Jake Lloyd. To be fair, the script & his lines were brutal. He was great in the first teaser trailer. They should've kept him a very quiet introvert, make that into his Dark Side falling. Instead we've got some kid performance even too juvenile for Sesame Street.

Ditto for The War of the Worlds (2005). Dakota Fanning played her part a little too well for my liking.
As for one that I liked, I thought McKenna Grace was pretty good in Gifted (2017).

All the kids in Whistle Down the Wind deserve a positive mention. I could happily live in a world without any Shirley Temple performances.
