Thanks to everyone who offered lists for 1939. Wow, I knew it was a big year for the cinema, but really had no idea how much Ok. so now on to 1940 Oscar goes to " Gone with the Wind" My friend was upset when I told him I haven't seen Double Indemnity yet, so that's on the list and of course The Grapes of Wrath as one of the best films Please share your favorite on your list, and or the one you've seen most often.

The Sea Hawk looks like good fun The Sea Hawk is pretty good fun, though it's probably a middle-tier Errol Flynn movie for me. Everything above that, I've seen more than two or three times. Foreign Correspondent is one of my very favorite Hitchcock movies.

Of course every year has it's gems. I didn't know about a 1940 Pride and Prejudice! Hope I can find it! Thanks rudeboy!

My top 20:
Despite having some clear favourites from 1940 this is likely the weakest year of the 1940s for me. WW2 is the culprit, with the majority of European countries not really being present on the film scene and the US carrying most of ther load. I do find it odd that 1944, 1945 and 1946 managed to put out a greater number of great international showings despite the devastation though.
The Grapes of Wrath (1940, John Ford) His Girl Friday (1940, Howard Hawks) The Letter (1940, William Wyler) Pinocchio (1940, Hamilton Luske & Ben Sharpsteen) The Long Voyage Home (1940, John Ford) The Thief of Bagdad (1940, Ludwig Berger & Michael Powell) Dívka v modrém / The Girl in Blue (1940, Otakar Vávra) Abe Lincoln in Illinois (1940, John Cromwell) Foreign Correspondent (1940, Alfred Hitchcock) Strange Cargo (1940, Frank Borzage)
Gaslight (1940, Thorold Dickinson) The Mortal Storm (1940, Frank Borzage) Operette (1940, Willi Forst) The Sea Hawk (1940, Michael Curtiz) Pride and Prejudice (1940, Robert Z. Leonard) They Drive by Night (1940, Raoul Walsh) Rebecca (1940, Alfred Hitchcock) The Great McGinty (1940, Preston Sturges) 'Northwest Passage' (Book I -- Rogers' Rangers) (1940, King Vidor) Christmas in July (1940, Preston Sturges)

The Grapes of Wrath deserves all it's accolades, but when a friend asked me to watch His Girl Friday, I couldn't believe it. I needed to mediate for three days after. Thanks for the great list.
