Think about it. If the Predator series ended with the first one and no more were ever made, that standalone movie would be seen as even more legendary. Same goes if they ended Terminator at the second one. Or Die Hard with the 3rd.
Terminator Dark Fate may result in Terminator 1 and 2 looking a lot better relatively, but if no bad sequels were made it would elevate the originals even higher than they are now.

For me, it doesn't detract anything from the original film.

Sequels have zero effect on how I see the original films.

I have no idea why anyone would re-evaluate their opinion of a movie in a negative way because of a bad sequel.

I have no idea why anyone would re-evaluate their opinion of a movie in a negative way because of a bad sequel. It depends on how much the story affects the original. Regardless, you can always ignore sequels either way-- especially if they're tacked on several years or even decades after the previous installment. It doesn't change your opinion of the original (if anything, it may elevate it), but it does tarnish the experience of following the story.

Movies like Terminator 1 & 2, Alien & Aliens and Predator, have got all replay value, I watch them from time to time and will no doubt see them again sooner or later. They are so good I can forget about the sequels.

I've heard plenty of people say the Matrix sequels ruined the original for them. And it seems treated more like a relic of the time period than an enduring classic like Star Wars. So maybe to an extent?
I woukd say perfect trilogies like Toy Story and Bourne are no longer trilogies and no longer perfect, so there's that.

It does nothing to the original.
A good original is not going to turn bad if the sequel is bad.

I dunno about "ruin" but it might change my perspective a bit. For example I tend to cringe a bit at the make out scene between Leia and Luke in "Empire Strikes Back" over the implied incest...

Kinda depends if they're closely related in tone and/or story, but usually I like to forget a bad sequel when thinking about the original(s). It's still there for me to enjoy it.

I think the OP has a point. The Back to the Future trilogy is a good example. They're untainted by years of bad sequels, spinoffs and reboots.

You mean the Dragos not Creed 2. I wouldn't have watched it if the Drago family and Ivan didn't return. Couldn't tolerate the first Creed movie.

It doesn't affect the quality of the previous work per se, but once you've seen the terrible sequel(s), it's going to be in the back of your mind when rewatching anything that came before. "This was an incredible film. Now if only they hadn't made that bullshit sequel..."

Prequels can be more harmful than sequels. With sequels you can stop watching, with prequels it's a back story for the original. It took me a while to accept that Darth Vader was a wee brat and that he invented C3PO. Prometheus, the mystery of the pilot in Alien was gone.

I've personally distilled this mad century of sequels & prequels & reboots. Back in the day, when a sequel/prequel came out, it seemed to immediately saddle the original's legacy.
I think it was around Live Free or Die Hard that I ceased acknowledging them as canon for myself. Same year was Home Alone 3 which remains the easiest no-go shutdown for me.
Is it irony that the more they churn out, the easier it is to shop around & pick which ones remain alive for one's self interest? When I re-watch SW, I go: R1, SW, AOTC, ROTS, ESB, ROTJ. That's it. That's the saga for me.
I'll be watching JW Dominion when that comes out, while I've ignored the first 2 JW's altogether (I did pay to see JW, yet I fell asleep in my showing so I don't count it).

Its become bad lately especially with all the Disney fantasy peequels like Cruella
