did this movie inspire about 50% of Lifetime Channel movies ever made or what? (The Hand that Rocks the Cradle inspired the other 50%) A pretty average thriller but the first 15 minutes or showing what seems to be a loving couple but slowly revealing something is clearly wrong is genuinely unnerving. Strong performances from Julia Roberts and Patrick Bergin (what happened to that guy?) as well. Nicely shot and a surprisingly beautiful score by Jerry Goldsmith. A flashback to a time when a standard thriller could become one of the years top grossing films because of who was starring in it

Saw it a month or two ago. I found it to be a quite conventional, un-thrilling thriller. However, I do realize that I am looking at it from a man's point of view. For a woman, especially a conventional film viewer and not a particularly discerning one, this kind of setup is more emotionally resonant than it is to a man. As a general rule, women are more creatures of emotion than men. They see the central character and identify with her. They have either been themselves in a similar situation or could potentially have been/be in the future. When this kind of emotional identification takes over, things like a lack of thrills, plot holes or convenient contrivances - like the un-flushed ring in the toilet - don't matter.
