Thoughts on this movie?
I watched this last night and liked it. Solid and efficient, as any movie from that era with John Malkovich, Clint Eastwood, and directed by Wolfgang Petersen was bound to be.
Malkovich is particularly great here. I actually don't think Eastwood can keep up with him once he really gets going, but perhaps that was intentional since the same could be said of their respective characters?
Either way, I thought it was a very good little thriller (7.5/10).

8.5/10. It’s one of my favorite Clint Eastwood movies. The back-and-forth mind games between him and John Malkovich is terrific.

Solid thriller, and I'm not always the biggest Eastwood fan. But this was at the beginning of his resurgence after a lackluster period thru much of the 80s.

Clint Eastwood had a lackluster period? 1990 White Hunter, Black Heart as John Wilson 1990 The Rookie as Nick Pulovski 1989 Pink Cadillac as Tommy Nowak 1988 The Dead Pool as Insp. Harry Callahan 1986 Heartbreak Ridge as Gunnery Sgt. Tom 'Gunny' Highway 1985 Pale Rider as Preacher 1984 City Heat I don't call that a stellar period, but to each their own.

Don't forget Tightrope (1984). He's pretty good in that.

Lots of people like Heartbreak Ridge? When you mentioned lackluster and Clint Eastwood I knew you had no clue what you were talking about. Clint has always been laidback that's his thing. What's your age?

Sorry/not sorry if that offends you.

IMO, the only really weak films in this period were the three I emboldened, none of which Eastwood directed, and in all of which his performances were too broad and over the top; yet quite brave. But Clint is funny, tough and vulnerable as Gunny Highway in Heartbreak Ridge; even though the film never reaches any great heights, Pale Rider has stood the test of time; it's a keeper with a classic, seemingly effortless performance from Clint as Preacher, * The Rookie was kinda cool and kinda fun one Friday night in 1990, and White Hunter, Black Heart, while not a complete success, is never less than fascinating, and Clint's Huston impersonation is fascinating to watch. So you are kinda right, it was a less than stellar period, but as a huge fan of Eastwood since the late 1960s and early seventies, it's not a period in his lengthy career I would have wanted to miss. * The Rookie is the only one which I don't have on Blu Ray or DVD and haven't revisited since seeing it on the big screen.

I love this movie, it's one of my favorite performances by both Clint Eastwood and John Malkovich. If I were going to assemble a list of Greatest Movie Villains of All Time, then Mitch Leary would make the list. He's terrifying and I love how the writers and Malkovich approached the character. There is zero attempt to bring humanity to the character, he has no personal vendetta or political bent that gives him grey area, he is an obsessive sociopath completely detached from his objective. Malkovich is still able to make this character believable and fully fleshed out. 8/10

Outstanding action thriller. Edge-of-your-seat excitment raised to the highest level. I agree with you jonesjxd, Mitch Leary is one of the greatest movie villains, and John Malkovich gave that character a lot of depth.

Awesome film! I'm a huge fan of Clint Eastwood but yeah John Malkovich steals the show as the cold blooded villain (I keep forgetting he was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars that year. Well deserved) I especially liked the scene where Malkovich's character kills the two hunters.
8/10
