Sidney Greenstreet "Greenstreet had a great theatrical career before making his film debut in The Maltese Falcon (1941). He is reported to have acted in every major Shakespearean play and committed 12,000 lines of Shakepearean verse to memory." "Active in live theater since 1902, his film debut, occurring when he was 62 years old, was as Kasper Guttman in the classic The Maltese Falcon (1941), with Humphrey Bogart and Peter Lorre. He teamed with Lorre in eight more movies after that. In eight years he made 24 films."

Richard Farnsworth "An American stuntman who, after more than 30 years in the business, moved into acting and became an acclaimed and respected character actor, Richard Farnsworth was a native of Los Angeles. He grew up around horses and as a teenager was offered an opportunity to ride in films. He appeared in horse-racing scenes and cavalry charges unbilled, first as a general rider and later as a stuntman. His riding and stunting skills gained him regular work doubling stars ranging from Roy Rogers to Gary Cooper, and he often doubled the bad guy as well. Although. like most stuntmen, he was occasionally given a line or two of dialogue, it was not until Farnsworth was over 50 that his natural talent for acting and his ease and warmth before the camera became apparent. When he won an Academy Award nomination for his role in Comes a Horseman (1978), it came as a surprise to many in the industry that this "newcomer" had been around since the 1930s. Farnsworth followed his Oscar nomination with a number of finely wrought performances, including The Grey Fox (1982) and The Natural (1984). In 1999 he came out of semi-retirement for a tour-de-force portrayal in The Straight Story (1999)."

Katie Johnson's stage career began in 1894 (aged 16) and she was doing well when she made her first of 41 screen appearances in 1932 (aged 54). However, she was confined to minor roles on screen, often uncredited. Indeed she was still uncredited as late as 1955 (aged 77). But that year she appeared alongside Alec Guinness, Cecil Parker, Herbert Lom and Peter Sellars in The Ladykillers dir: Alexander Mackendrick, and won the Best British Film Actress award at the BAFTAs (UK equivalent of the Oscars). According to IMDb: The producers originally rejected director Alexander Mackendrick's choice of Katie Johnson for the role of Mrs. Wilberforce on the grounds that she might be too frail for the project, and so they cast a younger actress who died before filming began.

42? A mere youth still learning the trade. I am 81 and am yet to make my screen debut. It will be a sight to behold.

Speaking of Burt Mustin brings to mind Judith Lowry Born in 1890, she performed on stage and retired early to raise nine children. She had an uncredited role in 1942, took a break (with all those kids) until 1962. She eventually came into her own in the 60s and 70s as playful elderlies on stage, screen and TV. She capped her rather erratic career in 1975 playing "Mother Dexter" on the sitcom Phyllis (1975) starring Cloris Leachman. The Judith began in a recurring part but was so well liked that she was made permanent by the end of the first season. On December of 1976, her 86-year-old character "married" her 92-year-old boyfriend Arthur on the show (played by Burt Mustin).

Arnold Ridley Had a good career as a playwright and jobbing actor before landing the role of Private Godfrey in Dad’s Army when he was in his 70s and became a household name. Apart from Dad’s Army he wasn’t really a star but it’s enough for him to be featured in a series of Royal Mail stamps.

And Judi Dench was 60 before she became well known. BUT There were MANY who knew Judi Dench and loved her ( if only from her work on television) before she became BONDed. She had a successful career before her days as Q.

I'm not saying they weren't around, but Freeman and Dench were "unknowns" to the masses until their more mature years.

I'm not saying they weren't around, but Freeman and Dench were "unknowns" to the masses until their more mature years. Gotcha . BUT ... it seems that many in those masses think that Alec Guinness is known only as Obi Wan and have no idea who he is aside from that. BUT that's for another thread and another day.

Ah, well, Alec had won the Oscar 20 years prior Obi.
