7/10. Takes its time. Cumberbatch overcomes on-paper miscasting to give perhaps his best performance to date, and Kodi Smit-McPhee is perfectly cast. Kirsten Dunst is also good but poor Jesse Plemons is (as usual) wasted. Superbly shot, powerfully directed by Campion. A flawed but excellent adaptation of a flawed but excellent novel.

Phil as written in the novel is about as far from Cumberbatch as one can get. Benedict is a great actor but there’s a sensitivity and vulnerability to most of his performances and his persona. He would not have occurred to me in casting this role, yet it works beautifully.
