are there certain Christmas songs that should be disqualified as a true Christmas songs because they don't follow some sort of rule that doesn't make them a real Christmas song the same way Die Hard doesn;t follow along with some rule that makes it not a Christmas film?

Sure. 'Jingle Bells' was originally written for Thanksgiving.

Let It Snow. Nothing in the lyrics about Christmas.
The song was written in July, 1945 in Los Angeles by lyricist Sammy Cahn and composer Jule Styne (both Jewish). Cahn noted at the time that it was one of the hottest days on record in Los Angeles, and he just wanted it to snow.

How about novelty songs like "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" or "I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas"? Nobody is going to be sharing those on any Christmas album or TV special.

Sure. 'Jingle Bells' was originally written for Thanksgiving. Wow, I never knew that. God bless you always!!! Holly P.S. I once saw it said that "If We Make It Through December" wasn't written as a Christmas song.

East 17's "Stay Another Day" is actually about the suicide of the brother of one of the band members.
It's a song I hated when it came out, but one I've grown to almost love over the years

Same thing with “Sleigh Ride” (composer Leroy Anderson, lyrics added later by Mitchell Parish), right down to being written in July. And also (without the written-in-July part, as far as I know) “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” (Frank Loesser. Very much Frank Loesser).

I should note, though, that I don’t think any of these songs should be “disqualified.” And I do think Die Hard is a Christmas movie.

^^^ I've never seen the first Die Hard film, but to me, even if I were to watch it, I wouldn't consider it to be a Christmas film. I've seen the first Lethal Weapon film plenty of times which takes place at Christmas time too, but I will never label it a Christmas film. In my opinion, the plots of the two films do not have anything to do with Christmas.
God bless you always!!!

Maybe I should watch that this month, what with the Christmas setting. But with Die Hard, at the risk of relitigating an old debate in a thread in which it doesn’t belong, yes, it’s full of action, f-bombs, and explosions (and great performances, ingenious plotting, and hilarious lines)—but it also has tons of Christmas songs, lots of Christmas imagery, and a message of goodwill and family togetherness. And if those last three don’t make a Christmas movie, I’m not sure what does.

Well that would be because it was written by Shane Black - the king of non-Christmas films set around Christmas! The Last Boy Scout (1991), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005), Iron Man 3 (2013), The Nice Guys (2016)...all written and sometimes directed by Black, all set around the festive season.

Weirdly enough, that Predator remake he did wasn't a Christmas movie but a Halloween movie instead.
