Nope, some pretty good albums, kinda the "last year" for alternative rock:
Celebrity Skin- Hole Nimrod- Green Day Fat of the Land- Prodigy Around the Fur- Deftones Static Age- Misfits (this one might be cheating since the songs were recorded years before)

Agree
Celebrity Skin was released September 2 1998. Or that's what Alexa tells me.
It wasn't finished recording until February 1998.

Going to an earlier point, this was when alternative was kinda dying off and rock was looking for the "next thing" (and unfortunately that next thing turned out to be nu-metal, Blink 182 inspired pop punk, and post grunge)

Admittedly, I may have bought only Dispepsi by Negativland that year.

I think you've got a point about 1997 not being a good year for music. I own only two 1997 releases: Judas Priest - "Jugulator" and Marauder - "Sense of Metal".

Perhaps, but 1996 and 1998 surely made up for it.
