Just watched it for the first time just now. Interesting question... I lean towards the side of leaving it as it is. You can still pursue the quarterback and put a hand on him to make sure he doesn't do this without getting flagged, and it's a subtle enough move that it doesn't make it the unnecessary roughness call much of a risk.
This obviously worked incredibly well, but it's not something I'd think to work that well ever again.

15 yards from line of scrimmage. The rule isn't in the sport for some cute reason, it's so guys like him don't get driven to hospital & die in their 40's.
I would also yellow card him & next bad offense he's banned for a game.

It's like starting to signal for a fair catch, then running with the ball.

It's like starting to signal for a fair catch, then running with the ball. When I saw this play I immediately thought they'd come up with a rule in the offseason. It's hard enough on defenders these days without QBs pulling shit like this because they know defenders are afraid to get flagged or tossed out. It should just be a dead ball where the incident occurred.

Sounds like he wasn't trying to trick them, he just saw them backing off and changed his mind. Too bad somebody couldn't have crushed him on the way. Even if he started to slide again. I still go with just the "he's down" change to the rule. I don't see a reason for it being punitive.

Didn't look like much to me in real time. Defenders didn't do their job is all.

Not a fan of adding another judgment call to the game. First time a QB stumbles a bit and the ref calls him down, there will be calls to kill the rule.

But I figure targeting is already up to them, and targeting is what's going to be called a lot more when these QBs start playing games with the fake sliding. But ultimately that's the reason they won't institute a rule change. How can a ref be expected to tell the difference between a fake slide and an ugly juke move by a QB who isn't a particularly gifted runner?

This should have been a controversy years ago. There are quarterbacks who run towards the sidelines like they are going to go out and then hop back inside for a few more yards knowing that they think the defenders will just back off. I think the only reason this one has caught people's attention is because it went for a touchdown.

Or Mahomes straight up baiting guys to hit him late as he pulls up on the sidelines with both players momentum carrying them out of bounds.

Like baseball players watching their pitcher get all the junk calls... & then stare down the ump at their own ring ups. Stop. Hell, we see it in the NBA every 40 seconds... players act like nothing is a foul, until they've got the ball. It's f'n annoying.
