I'm rewatching season 4 ahead of the new season which is due soon and am so hooked in it that I'm considering going back to the beginning (S01).
So good is the writing, that in many episodes the lesser lights get a chance to take centre stage and involve us in their stories and we don't notice the non-appearances of Gennaro, Patrizia, Enzo, Valerio, etc. and we find ourselves shocked and upset when some of these supporting cast characters, come to an abrupt and violent end.
Not really regarded as well as The Sopranos, BBad, The Wire, etc...but should be
'See Naples and die'

I tried to watch the movie once but gave up after 10 minutes. I guess I wasn't in the mood for so much unpleasantness.

The film was pretty good, so I may get round to the series one day.

The series runs for 5 seasons (the latter very recent) and 58 episodes. The gangs who run Naples underworld are spread throughout the city in 4/5 districts. They function autonomously within a loose alliance and as various bosses get ambitious, then coerced betrayals usually lead to 'wars'.The pacing is terrific with nary a dull moment and no character is exempt from harm, usually done in public, in broad daylight. (Who's gonna tell the cops?) The acting is great. (Everybody loves being a tough guy) but I can't think of more than a very few characters, who have survived thus far. Pension plans are hard to sell in Napoli.
