Expect a well crafted soap opera in a fantasy setting. But don’t expect great fantasy genre fiction. And definitely don’t expect a character driven story. Early on, I was impressed with the great dialogue and characterization. But don’t be fooled into thinking that any of these characters will receive coherent well planned arcs. Most are canon fodder and the rest are frozen in stasis until the final season. And despite some great world building, the plot is ultimately thin and unsatisfying. I could agree with much of this. The series is written more like history, which is indeed a soap in which everybody eventually dies and gets replaced with new generations. Vikings took this approach too. History doesn't have a carefully crafted plot either, things just happen and it would be a mistake to seek a meaning to it, no matter how much 19th century historians tried to. So satisfaction is to be found on the way, not at the end of it. All those who followed this like the football world cup, cheering for their own, randomly selected team, ended up disappointed when another one won.

When you said you were "6 episodes in", I understood you'd watched the 6th. Well, Viserys got his crown faster than expected. He wasn't exactly king material but I hoped he would make more trouble than that. Too bad for the invasion plans. I suppose Daenerys will get busy producing more sons for the big Khal, now. Good question. She's the kind of sister who didn't care too much for her brother, for some reason… he was no dragon after all. The way her marriage started, I expected her to yearn for a way out of it, quite possibly a violent, strangly or poisoned one, but it seems a large part of the audience buys into the big savage fantasy instead. Granted, she's probably safer that way. At least until Robert's assassins turn up… yeah same, i felt his character was so strong and interesting that we would get to watch him plot his ways to the throne for much longer, I thought he would make a truly great opponent. Oh well...

I'm a guy that likes story, cinematography, action, violence, tits, details, and morally ambiguous characters, so it was perfect for me. My oldest kid loved it. My wife likes feel good action adventure but also likes Gladiator, Die Hard, The Patriot, The Witcher, LOTR, and she liked it. I made GOT family tree charts for each season (no spoilers), and my family got a lot more out of it because they don't keep track of details like me. (I had already seen it twice when I watched it with them). I might need those family tree charts you made 😂 boy does this show throw around a Lot of Names!

I see your point but during that time and in their situation I presume it was a) more common and b) actuay the best plan for both of them to return home... so.. she should have understood and take one for them team PLUS she seemed to like the brute anyway

You get all this spoiler free on the HBO Viewer's Guide. Select the last episode you watched and the information will be limited to what you have already seen, including maps and family trees (under "Houses"). There are 75 named characters in the 1st season.

As to the plan of going home, a conversation with Ser Jorah in an earlier episode had shown both no longer believed in Viserys' ability to carry it out. So he was becoming a problem and Daenerys had just become the accepted queen of the savages. Maybe she liked that too.

nooo not my dear Ned Stark... (( It sure was impactful. yeah, what a horrible death too. Confessed to crimes he didnt commit, disgraced himself in front of everybody, had his kids watch his decapitation, awful awful. I dont like Sansa at all. Or Denerys (she just birther the dragons I finished season1 ). John Snow and Aria and Imp are my overall favorite. I really REALLY hope they dont pair up John Snow with Denerys, she is so uninteresting. :/ JOhn Snow should end up king. With Imp as his hand. Or viceversa. ANd Aria their chief bodyguard or chief ranger... Yeah the show is good. Cant wait to start season 2 tmr. Cant even imagine how people watched this having to wait a week in between episodes or YEAR between seasons.

Everyone hated Sansa, Joffrey, Cersei, Jaime, etc. Season 2 is pretty good based off memory...it's been a while since ive revisited it but I remember several beats.

Cant even imagine how people watched this having to wait a week in between episodes or YEAR between seasons. I didn't like Ned Stark. When he died, I wasn't shocked, only midly surprised and interested, because the story was moving into unexpected territory. Of course I originally thought he would somehow get out and prevail, as main characters usually do. The show was so complex, with so many stories, place and character names that I immediately started watching each episode twice and reading their Wikipedia entry, so I had a good grasp of things right away. By Ep. 5-6, Ned Stark had become the fool making a mess and I don't like fools. Robert was right about the Dothraki threat and I saw how the Lannisters were the basis of stability, not the grabby plotters (they had already grabbed all there was long ago, when they helped put Robert on the throne). I liked Tyrion: smart and witty. When his father sent him to rule the capital in his stead, that was the team I was siding with. I liked Tywin the moment he appeared. Now there was a man who wasn't a principled ass. I had watched the 1st season in about 10 days and immediately got the 2nd. I didn't want to wait. With Robb made king in the North, I expected him to spend the coming season removing Joffrey while Daenerys would be busy breastfeeding her ugly kids and teaching them to crap in a box. Then I guessed she would be ready to bring them down on Robb sometime in the 3rd season.

Everyone hated Sansa, Joffrey, Cersei, Jaime, etc. I liked Cersei from the start. She made me look up the actress on IMDb, which is something I had never done before (never cared for actors in any way). It wasn't quite clear to me then but Cersei and Tywin were my favourites.

Yea there’s always outliers. I’m just speaking in generalities. I’ve always liked Tywin. On the show at least. The actor did a great job portraying strength with that character that didn’t translate the same way in the books.

nooo not my dear Ned Stark... (( I remember watching that and being sure up until the very last second that someone was going to save him somehow. Surely they wouldn't kill the protagonist of the show in the first season!
