Japanese film director and screenwriter Yoshishige Yoshida (吉田 喜重) has left us at the age of 89, On December 8th. (pneumonia) Between 1960 and 2004, he directed more than 20 films, some of which starred his wife, actress Mariko Okada. After a long absence from the screen following the 1973 Coup d'État, he returned with A Promise 1986, which was shown in the Un Certain Regard section of the 1986 Cannes Film Festival. Two years later, his film Wuthering Heights would compete for the Golden Palm at the 1988 Festival. In 2002, Women in the Mirror followed after another hiatus of 14 years. In addition to his theatrical films, he directed a series of documentaries for Japanese TV. He named European cinema as a great influence on his work, most notably the directors Ingmar Bergman and Michelangelo Antonioni, and pre-war French films like the works of Jean Renoir. He also published a number of books on the topic of cinema, including one on his own cinematic work and an analysis of the films of Yasujirō Ozu. R.I.P. Yoshishige Yoshida

American film, theater, and television actor and director Stuart Margolin has left us at the age of 82, on December 12th. He won two Emmy Awards for playing Evelyn "Angel" Martin on the 1970's television series The Rockford Files 1979 and 1980, he was also nominated for The Tracey Ullman Show 1987 for directing. He played an important role, giving Charles Bronson his first gun in Death Wish 1974. In 1981, he portrayed the character of Philo Sandeen in a recurring role as a Native American tracker in the 1981–1982 television series, Bret Maverick. Perhaps best known for his work scoring films for director David Lynch, notably Blue Velvet 1986, the Twin Peaks saga 1990–1992, 2017, The Straight Story 1999, and Mulholland Drive 2001. American production designer and art director Albert Brenner has left us at the age of 96, on December 8th. He was nominated for five Academy Awards for Best Art Direction: The Sunshine Boys 1975, The Turning Point 1977, California Suite 1978, 2010 1984 and Beaches 1988. His numerous credits also included Bullitt 1968, Monte Walsh 1970, The Goodbye Girl 1977, Coma 1978, The Presidio 1988, Pretty Woman 1990, Backdraft 1991, and Mr. Saturday Night 1992. American actress Sonya Eddy has left us at the age of 55, on December 19th. She made her acting debut in the Ruby Dee's play Zora Is My Name in 1990. Other stage credits included The Comedy of Errors, The Witch in Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods and Bloody Mary in South Pacific. From 2004 to 2005, she had a recurring role on Joan of Arcadia. In 2006, She began playing Epiphany Johnson on General Hospital on a recurring basis. From 2007 to 2008, she was a regular cast member on the spin-off, General Hospital: Night Shift. Italian actress Daniela Giordano has left us at the age of 75, on December 16th or 18th. She was foremost known for her appearances in the Italian exploitation cinema in the late 1960's and in the 1970's. She made her cinema debut in 1967 with the Franco and Ciccio film I barbieri di Sicilia by Marcello Ciorciolini. She had been active in a plethora of genres including commedia all'italiana, commedia sexy all'italiana, poliziottesco, and Spaghetti Western. She retired from cinema by 1980, temporarily ending her career with Secrets d'adolescentes by Gérard Loubeau. She returned to acting in 2015 with roles in Luciano Imperoli's Help Me Have No Human Ways and Valentina Gebbia's Erba Celeste. She is remembered by Italy 24 Press NewsR.I.P. Daniela Giordano

American actress Diane McBain has left us at the age of 81, on December 21st. (liver cancer) As a Warner Brothers contract player, reached a brief peak of popularity during the early 1960's. She was perhaps best known for playing an adventurous socialite in the 1960–1962 television series Surfside 6 and as one of Elvis Presley's leading ladies in 1966's Spinout. Among her movies are also Ice Palace 1960, Parrish 1961, Claudelle Inglish 1961, Black Gold 1962, The Caretakers 1963 and A Distant Trumpet 1964 during her Warner period. Her late 1960's AIP period included Thunder Alley 1967, The Mini-Skirt Mob 1968 and I Sailed to Tahiti with an All Girl Crew 1969. Australian actor Tony Barry has left us at the age of 81, on December 21st. He performed in nearly 60 feature films and over 45 television series, across a five-decade career. The longevity of his acting career was recognised when he received the 2014 Film Critics Circle of Australia award for his "extraordinary contribution to the Australian film industry". After acting in the television series The Box from 1975 to 1976, he began his film career in 1977 with The Mango Tree. Roles followed in a range of acclaimed Australian and New Zealand films, including Newsfront 1978, The Odd Angry Shot 1979, Goodbye Porky Pie 1981, We of the Never Never 1982, Australia 2008 and Home for Christmas 2010, for which he won Best Actor in the 2010 New Zealand Film and TV Awards. American art director and production designer James J. Murakami has left us at the age of 91, on December 15th (Complications from a fall) An Emmy award winner and Oscar nominee. He won an Emmy Award in 2006 for his work on the television series Deadwood. In 2008, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Art Direction for his work on the film Changeling 2008. Other movies include Apocalypse Now 1979, WarGames 1983, Beverly Hills Cop 1984, Gran Torino 2008 and American Sniper 2014, and four episodes of Battlestar Galactica 1979. American actress and singer Maggie Thrett has left us at the age of 76, on December 18th. Billboard journalist Aaron Sternfield, reviewing a live performance at Basin Street East, New York, on July 15, 1965, wrote that she "has a magnificent range, her phrasing and timing are near perfect, and she blends the right combination of sex and satire". Her acting career included The Devil's Brigade and Three in the Attic both 1968. Canadian-born British cinematographer Michael Reed has left us at the age of 93, on December 15th. Through the early 1950's he worked in the camera department at Hammer Films as a clapper loader and focus puller on films such as The Man in Black and Meet Simon Cherry before becoming the director of photography on Hammer's The Ugly Duckling 1959 and several Hammer horror films. He acted as director of photography on several ITC television series such as Sword of Freedom, The Adventures of Robin Hood and The Saint. He graduated to big scale film-making with the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service in 1969. Other movies include The Devil Ship Pirates 1964, The Gorgon 1964, Dracula: Prince of Darkness 1965, The McKenzie Break 1970, The Groundstar Conspiracy 1972, The Hireling 1973, Shout at the Devil 1976, The Passage 1979 and Wild Geese II 1985. Director Gabrielle Beaumont left us on October 8, 2022. British born Beaumont blazed a trail for women in Hollywood as a prolific director of episodic prime-time television. She worked on some of the most popular TV shows of the 80s and 90s, including M*A*S*H (1972), Dynasty (1981), Cagney & Lacey (1981), Hill Street Blues (1981), Miami Vice (1984), L.A. Law (1986) and Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman (1993). She also became the first female director in charge of Star Trek episodes, working on Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987), as well as Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (1993) and Star Trek: Voyager (1995). Perhaps best known for his roles as Travis in Blake's 7 1978, Harry Fenning in three series of Citizen Smith 1977 - 1979, Signor Donato in Casanova 2005 and Commander John Shepherd in Shoot on Sight 2007. He was an honours graduate from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, where he won numerous awards including Best Actor and Most Promising Actor, and was an Associate Member and served on the audition panel. British actor Christian Roberts has left us at the age of 78, on December 26th. Perhaps best remembered for his film debut role as the rebellious Denham in the 1967 film To Sir, with Love starring Sidney Poitier and Judy Geeson. He was educated at Cranleigh School, Surrey and at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Much of his acting career was in theatre. English actor and satirist John Bird has left us at the age of 86, on December 24th. He was a graduate of the Cambridge Footlights troupe. He was best known for his lengthy association with fellow Cambridge alumnus John Fortune, with whom he appeared in the trailblazing BBC satire That Was the Week That Was 1960's, in addition to contributing scripts. His greatest success came later as support for Rory Bremner in the long-running improvisational political sketch comedy Bremner, Bird and Fortune 1999. He is remembered by BBCR.I.P. John Bird
