It helps if you want to understand George Lucas's mindset when he created Star Wars, but it's not necessary. Film language is universal, or at least it should be. He captured the same elements when he directed the first Star Wars film: adventure, romance, brave hero (Luke Skywalker/Flash Gordon), heroine in peril (Leia/Dale Arden), and a dark lord (Darth Vader/Ming the Merciless).

No, I don't think so. Star Wars way overshadows Flash Gordon at this point.

No because a Star Wars show was made that explains them quite well. It doesn’t fix the acting and directing problems, but Clone Wars perfectly showcases what Lucas was going for.
