Anyone surprised the Devil jumped to someone else? I thought the whole ending with Marlena was anti-climactic so not a surprise at all, although I had no idea they were going to do this (had not seen spoilers).
Wait, so that's it for Jennifer? Jack and Jen are just leaving???
Monday Allie, Tripp, Chanel, and Johnny celebrate the New Year together. Sami suggests to Lucas that they leave town to rebuild their relationship. Kate stuns Roman with her confession. Steve and Kayla join John and Marlena for New Year's Eve festivities.
Tuesday Nicole makes an upsetting discovery. Xander and Jack patch up their friendship. Maggie enlists Abigail's help to find Sarah. Kayla refuses to let Steve track down Kristen on his own.
Wednesday Nicole is frosty with EJ when he tries to make amends. Kate presses Chad for the truth. Gwen flips out upon learning Abigail is looking into Sarah's disappearance. Xander questions Rex about his last interaction with Sarah.
Thursday Jennifer and Jack head back to Boston. Xander and Abigail work together to trace Sarah's whereabouts. Paulina has big plans for Chanel and Johnny. Johnny shares his good news with Marlena and John.
Friday Paulina extends an invitation to Lani. Anna and Tony return from Europe in time to join the festivities at the DiMera mansion. Johnny makes a stunning announcement. Susan arrives at Marlena's with a new premonition.

I’m glad to see that Marlena isn’t possessed anymore but I also like that it’s continuing through Johnny.
So, are we losing Alison Sweeney, Bryan Datillo, Matthew Ashford, Melissa “Amish” Reeves (Sorry, had to go there with that last outfit she wore) all at once? That really stinks!!!! Plus, I noticed that Eli is on recurring status now.
However, the show is still at a good pace and pretty consistent. They really did well with casting Allie and Johnny. I’m still not crazy about Chanel but she’s starting to grow on me.

I don't get the stuff with Missy. First her clothes were awful wtf. Her hair looks great though. But why bring her back for 4 lines just to have her leave with Jack? Like just bring in Cady full time to be Jennifer then. I don't get it.
I am disappointed about Lamon. But maybe we won't notice a difference.
I am still so confused about Alison and Bryan. I swore I read that Alison was back for good, not temporary. Yes Sami might be on and off the screen but I thought Ali was staying. It seems as though Lucas comes back next week to testify at EJ's trial, which seems insane.

These comings and goings are really becoming so confusing. Are they really leaving? Heck, Stacy seems to be coming and going all the time.

It is very unclear what's going on with most the cast. Based on DR, here's what I believe we know. - Alison Sweeney is gone for now. She likely will continue to come and go (she's said as much) but I believe there's nothing in the works now. If I recall, when her return was initially announced (in late 2020) it was said she was scheduled to appear through the next year, which obviously just now ended.
- Bryan Dattilo is unclear. He's still on contract, and Lucas appears in the spoilers for next week, he comes back to town to testify in E.J.'s trial. But Lucas did just... announce he was moving and this could just be a visit. So I don't know. The obvious next beat in Lucas' story is for it to be revealed to Salem that he was the one who kidnapped Sami, but there's no way to do compellingly do that without Ali. So he may just be in limbo for a while until Ali is available again.
- Matt Ashford was taken off contract a few months ago and just got back on contract last week. Jack and Jennifer announced they're leaving town, but they did make it a point to say they were not moving moving, that this was a temporary gig to turn this paper around and then they'd come back. I don't know what's going on but this makes me thiiiiink....
- The plan is for Melissa Reeves to return to the show in X months time but either she (or the show, financially, as I imagine she would be among the higher paid cast members) is not ready for that just yet, so in the meantime they bring Matt back in on contract, he'll maybe fly in and out as Abby and Gwen stories demand it (we actually know through social media that he has been on set since these episodes would have been filmed, so we have not seen the last of Jack), and then Jack and Jennifer will formally return at a later date. I have no idea, just a guess. If you're actually writing out Jack and Jennifer, why not just say so? Why pretend they're coming back soon if that's not the case?

Thanks for the update - all clear as mud lol
The Ali situation I get, I still swear I read she was back back but obviously I am wrong. I was getting invested in a Lumi reunion and now I feel ripped off (again!).
As for J&J...I struggled with them this week. Their scenes were awkward. Has anyone else noticed Matt is always looking off to the side or above people when he talks to them? I wonder if he needs queue cards or something? Anyway, I thought their scenes were weird and that stupid scene with Kayla and Steve was so bizarre, like literally Kayla explaining to the audience what is going on. It was bad.
I am fine if they are in Boston for a time, but I think if the reason is because of Missy's schedule then I'd prefer it if Cady just came back as Jennifer. I think J&J looking for Sarah would be more interesting than Abigail looking for her but whatever.
As I said before, when characters come and go for short periods, it makes it hard to get invested in them. I am ok when people get backburnered after a major story, but this is not what is happening now, especially with Lumi.
Does everyone remember when Deidre Hall would take her summer vacations, so Marlena was in Colorado visiting her parents? That always worked, but it was never while Marlena was in the middle of a major storyline!

From what I read on Soap Hub, Alison Sweeney has two Hallmark gigs she’s currently working on. Once they are completed, she will return to Salem for a while. So, I think the Lucas/EJ thing can somehow be resolved with Lucas coming around so often.
I would really love to see Jack more forefront on the show. He’s still young enough to hold leading male star. I would love to see him run for another political position in Salem or for the state. Following in Harper’s footsteps but clearing the name Devereaux and doing good with it. This way, he doesn’t have to play second fiddle to Jennifer, Abigail or Gwen.

It's so interesting to me that the show cannot figure out what to do with Jack and Lucas aside from using them to prop up the female leads when they are both fan favourites.
Meanwhile, it is almost universally agreed everyone hates Rafe yet the show bends over backward to make things work for his character.
