It's a flawless film. Beautifully directed and acted and has there every been a more beautiful woman than Grace Kelly in this film? One of my favorite 50s films. 10/10 My complete agreement on every point, James. Marvellous film, and as for Grace--ah!

10/10. I had seen this only once before, but it was when I was just a young child. I hated it then. But I've wised up.
This is a brilliant and engaging mystery that truly blew me away with each passing scene (especially with the snappy and fluid writing).

Damn, that's a brutal score. May I asked why you disliked it so much?

The smallest problem was Grace Kelly's over-the-top performance. The biggest problem was the music. Most of it was cheerful, like if this was a comedy. During the climax, they cut it completely. The silence was good in THE BIRDS because it created suspense. Suspense is the fear of what will happen, not the fear of what is happening, so cutting the music during that scene was a bad move. After all that time thinking there was going to be a twist in which THORWALD was innocent or something like that, it turns out he did murder his wife. I can deal with that, since simple is sometimes better. However, that was it. The only rule in themMystery genre is that the mystery has to get solved. Yes, technically the mystery was solved because we learned the truth, but with no details. We didn't learn how, or more importantly, why he did it. I've heard of one-dimensional characters, but come on!

8, but it seemed really bad the last time I watched it.

I've heard of one-dimensional characters, but come on! Despite the points you make, 1/10 is still a rather severe score. I actually took the total opposite viewpoint, the twist being that he WAS guilty all along. Throughout the film, we're led to believe that James Stewart is borderline paranoid (confined to his apartment going stir crazy), while all the other characters come across as level headed and logical. As for why and how he did it, we don't need to know, a large chunk of the film is basically "looking through James Stewart's eyes", urging us to believe him while the more reasonable and logical characters try their best to have us believe otherwise. The movie is not about why or how, but did he or didn't he? In my humble opinion.

4/10. I just wanted him to shut up. Nearly as annoying in Vertigo. And I like Stewart in other films.
